what you mean? Ross is a known for gold as it was known to have had the 99oz nugget found there and also has a gold mine just out of the town

Yes, I was pulling your leg. A lot of people here would give their first born to be living in Ross!

Go to that gold panning commercial place in Ross... spend $10 and they will teach you the basics.

Then ask them where you can go for a fossick... if you live locally they will be friendly and helpfull.

I hope to get to shamrock creek near hokitika next sunday weather permitting. if you can get up there I may be able to show you the basics. i'm still learning myself so don't get too technical though.

Hi Jeremy

When you are just trying to get the hang of it around home.
Grab some number 6 lead shot out of an old cartridge (say about 5), chuck it in that dirt you got from Jones's creek.
Now practice panning it....you'll have fun and know your technique is ok when you're left with just the shot in your pan.
You can get a small pan from those ladies at the Ross centre and pan with water from either a bucket or one of those bigger pans you can get from trademe. Your dirt will be in the bucket so you can pan over and over.

The gold that they let the tourists play with is a fair bit bigger than what you'll normally find in Jones's creek if in fact you find any. (its pretty small). On this forum you'll see the other fossicking areas around and once your hooked you'll be away.

Good luck.

From personal experience, this is wrong. There is decent gold in that fossicking area. Finding it is difficult though.

i to have found gold at the fossicking area in ross...it is a time consuming venture and hard to come by sometimes...but be patiant and you will succeed.. at first you may lose some gold out of your pan until you get the hang of it...but once you have it down you will find that you can keep the tinest piece of gold flake in your pan so small that you almost need a magnifing glass to see it..even with black sand witch at times can be very hard to seperate the gold out of,it can be done ... ask anyone you see panning how it is done and weather they are exsperianced or not you will get some little tip you didnt know about and will soon succeed.
