Hello All

My name is Lynda and I'm a complete noobie to the world of MD, but given I have a lifetime fossicking (& foraging) habit, I think metal detecting will be my perfect hobby!
I agonized over what to buy, eventually settled on the Garrett AT Pro, which seems to cover all bases (hope I got it right!)

I will have to twiddle my thumbs for 10 days until it arrives, but plan to use the time educating myself by way of videos, reading etc on the subject.

I'm really excited!

Hi Garry - Thanks for the welcome. After some practice around my place I will certainly hit the beaches and old sites around here and no doubt I will want to go gold hunting. I've always thought the Shag should have some gold somewhere. I don't know where to look, or what to look for in terms of terrain, so it will be a big learning curve.

Have you had any luck in the Shag? What MD are you using? I have a tracking # this am for my shipment, so hopefully I will have it before Queens Birthday:)

Hi Lynda - metal detectors come in all shapes and sizes as you will know. I had thought of up grading to a minelab 5000 but my son with my Xtreme is proving that I sure dont have to upgrade at the moment. On my own property he got two nice pieces out of the tailings on top of the mountain and in a few hours the other day 2/3 of an ounce and just before that 3/4 ounce including a 1/4 ounce nugget.
You have plenty of opportunity to find gold close to Palmerston - my father got a twelve pennyweight piece up around Loop Road some years ago and my uncle had many ounces near the S corner where the road, railway and river are all side by side just before the spot you can drive down to the river to park. In fact my uncle used to take what was definitely one of New Zealands very first gold dredges there and did well with it - that would have been 1965 or earlier.
I do know some spots up that way in the pioneer and gold rush days and have never been worked since as knowledge of those finds has been nearly lost. I would be quite happy for you to know these places but a forum is not the place to disclose them...I have no intention of going there as I have too many places to look and my age tells me that I havent got time to do them...in fact I havent the time to do my own place thoroughly as that needs another twenty years at my rate!
