Now that my sand scoop has arrived I'm pretty keen to go try some beach detecting.

Going to try and put a long handle on the scoop with a couple of u-bolts or something (it's just a little handheld scoop) then thinking I might head out to Sumner probably Sunday sometime.

So if anyone else is keen to head out that way, leave a message and I shall report back with more accurate (wife approved) times that I'll be heading out.

Cheers MK,

I know our beaches down here haven't been very popular since the quakes, and it hasn't exactly been beach-going weather. But quite a few people walk/jog along the dry sand area out at Sumner, so maybe I'll get lucky and find some treasure.

At low tide there it closes quite a large wet-sand area with what I can only describe as a low channel, I'm not sure exactly how waves and weather effect things (where rings/etc get washed to) but I'd be thinking that channel might hold a few shiny bits and pieces.

Only got the F2, so dry sand for me. Might have a quick test on a damp area though.

It's more of a 'go try it for fun' kind of thing for me, first beach hunt and all.. Might end up back at Hagley later in the night anyway, lol.

"Go try it for fun". That's the right attitude to find cool stuff.
As a suggestion for your first beach hunt you might like to try searching up and down, up and down at right angles to the water to see if you can find a line along the beach of heavier objects like sinkers. If you find that then start hunting parallel to the water in both directions on that line. Sometimes sinkers can also mean that gold rings may be present. In reality though my experience is that gold can be anywhere on the beach.

Appreciate the advice, was thinking of asking for some tips and this gives me a good place to start. I wouldn't say no to some rings, but I'll be just a happy to find a few dollars or a bunch of tops/tabs.. I'm guessing, notch out iron and dig everything out there?

Chchnuggetdetect is looking for a partner for the beach this weekend I think. Perhaps you could pm him if he hasnt been in touch already.

I found the F2 too chattery in the wet sand but ok in dry. Just try all metal mode (no discrim) to get the extra depth as things sink FAST at the beach and ignore the iron signals if you want. There's not that many signals on Sumner beach so you may as well dig them all if it's easy enough.

I went there a couple weeks ago and got a few coins in front of that bar/cafe on the waterfront but had to listen to all the idiots opinions who were watching/drinking. Oh the joy!

Yep dig every solid sound, that is, one that dings in both directions under the coil. With the F2 you might just get a bit of falsing as you get further down the wet sand towards the water. If so then just turn around otherwise you may spend too much time digging ghosts. :-)

I like to zigzag from dune to wet sand then back up to dune like WWWWWW when hunting on the dry. This means you cover more territory faster yet still locate any hot spots. Normally beach goers seem to lay their towels or sit down in the exact same areas. There can be large barren areas between the hot spots but different people at different times all seem to decide on the same spots. Because of this once you find one good target there will be more around in about a 5m radius. Thus after WWWW along the beach if I find something I will spiral out from that area for 5m then continue WWWW'ing along.

Also don't forget the edge of the dunes or grass, a lot of targets erode from here and can still be shallow enough to find with a detector in the dry.
