Thanks for putting that link out there Shilo. I stumbled across it a few weeks ago. I was having a chat to an old cocky up the Waitekauri who said Chook is well into his eighties but still walks a lot of the tracks and keeps them open.

I'd like to suggest two things. First would Chook be interested in doing a guided tour of his walks. He would have a captive audience and share his information. When these interesting people pass on they take this information with them. Many years ago when I was in London they had walking tours and I did the Charles Dickens tour in which we visited a few houses that he lived in and pubs that drank at, so naturally we had a pint with the tour guide in each pub, in which he told us stories. Of coarse if Chook was to point out good fossicking areas along the way , he would start a little gold rush !
Secondly the NZ Fossicking mag should be interviewing these interesting people because when they go they take their information with them.

That's what is so great with Chook willing to put the info up on the web. I only hope more old timers do this before all their knowledge is lost.

Had a look around for a day. Went for a walk up the Grace Darling Stream . Got only one speck from the Grace Darling stream, but there will be a few bits in there. The lower part of the Kathleen is full of gravel with no bedrock.

I've had a look up the Junction and Cascade, but found zilch and I'm pretty sure there were no workings on that side of the road.

The Alpha Road would be a good walk for a day with plenty to see. I just hope your sluice is aluminium.

There is gold up the Waitekauri, the bed rock is the key. This was got with my little sluice box & hand suction crevice tool. I doubt I cleaned it all out so good luck.

Wow, that's amazing. I mean, I'm half his age and find some tracks murderous. :)
