Interesting finds today. 1875 half penny in great cond., 1951 dutch 1 cent and a ring stamped 18k.

This could be my first gold ring but I am skeptical as it has tarnishing that won't rub off easily. However it isnt a very smooth ring. The pattern is similar to the outside of a coin eg roughish. Would the tarnishing just clean off?

It has 18k and no other markings stamped on it and it came up in the higher side of the pulltab range (66 on goldbug) which makes me wonder also as I thought it should be 9k if in that range. I could be reading the 8 wrong though, it could be a 0 making it 10k

I cant get any pics at the moment.

What do you knowledgable folk think?
Are there many fake stamped rings?.

EDIT: On closer inspection, it seems to be gold plated......didnt know they could stamp it 18k if it was only plated. Learn something new every day I guess. DAMN!

Yeah it was a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Woohoo the doubt the see the 18k woohoo then realise its plated. Damn.

Will be more gd stuff there though as Ive had a nice silver signet ring that my daughter wears, quite a few silvers dating back to 1880's and a huge brass frog amongst other things.
Its a nice old place and seems pretty virgin ground. Lets hope I find that elusive half crown and/or florin I cant seem to snatch up.

Nice finds. looking forward to seeing the pics. It may be GOLD by the sounds of things. The other metals in the GOLD break down after time. this may be the case. If stamped 18k then it probably is. Wishful thinking.

Is there anything else stamped after the 18k.

It could be 18k plated, with another stamp after the 18k indicating the plating thickness.

Nah theres nothing else....just 18k......im sure it is just plated though.....the tarnish just wont budge so its obviously the metal underneath the gold. I wish I was wrong!

Zap it with some electrolysis. A plated ring isn't worth anything so if the plating comes off its not going to matter and you can be sure what it is. If it is 18k gold then it will clean up very nicely no matter what sort of tarnish is on it and the electrolysis won't hurt it (so long as you don't leave it going for too long).
