Nothing really startling, but had great fun. I have no idea what two of them are, very corroded, someone suggested the large one is a penny. A 1966 Australian 2 cent coin, and 1940 sixpence. Also a Maori midden for interests sake.

Well done it's all learning - usually the bigger green coins are pennies. Keep up the good work!

Most likely would have looked like this.

Thanks, I hope to be heading there again tomorrow. A couple showed me where they have lost a wedding ring, it above the low tide mark, all we found were pull tabs. It is gold, only lost a few months ago. Be nice to help them out.
Anyone have any tips on searching for gold rings? Thanks.

Dig all signals from what a $2 coin reads on your detector down to iron. Chances are it will be in the pull tab range but not always. If its just a band it should be a solid tone but if it has a big chunky stone sticking out from it then the metal that holds the stone can give the sound a broken type tone.

Don't be disappointed if you don't find it. A gold ring can sink very fast in dry sand, I recovered one that was only lost a couple of days before and it was already 6" down. Also wind blown sand can build a beach up surprisingly fast. But go for it! There is no better reward then the look on a persons face when you give them their ring back.

Nice finds. They look like they were on the edge of the dunes, much beach to the water?

Thanks. Yes , Foss, only the sixpence was in the water. The others were shedding from a bank onto the sand from a camping area. There must be many in the grass of the camp area, maybe in better condition too. Cheers.

Good hunting Watts with some nice finds. Fairly sure you have an English penny there. Giveaway is the line above the date, seen across the bottom of the coin.

What's a maori midden? A dump for sea shells?

Hi, Thanks, yes fairly sure it was just a penny, can just see parts of it. The midden was a cooking area I think, there were layers of broken shells and carbon, solid really, no sand between. According to the ranger they are everywhere, from moa times hunting about 400 yrs ago. I wanted to be out today, but stuck at home. I've had the Ok from the ranger to have a poke about ( the European stuff from last century) Itching to go. Cheers.

Haven't been out for quite a while but this weekend spent a couple of hours at a the beach.
Found a nice lot of pennies around 1920's, 1959 and a 1920 3d which was tiny. best find today and my oldest coin so far 1889 half penny.

Hi, I finally got out today after a long break. Turned up a few coins, but also this ring at the beach. Can anyone guess whether it is gold or not? Perhaps I'm dreaming. It has a distinct copper tinge but no obvious markings. Fairly weighty (10.5g), lost any stones it had and the bridge part is punched up from underneath so not to be completely solid. Not as 'red as pics suggest. Cheers!

Hi there Watts. Ring looks to be copper. Stones found on GOLD rings are usually in some sort of setting like a claw setting etc.
Cool ring find all the same.
