Long way to go from chch! I'd imagine there would be far more junk than treasure considering the pub had burnt down. Funny how things go up in flames but burn down...
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Hey

Not to sure if anyone has been up there for a look but the old pub site on the way upto the Big River gold mine would be well worth a look I would have thought..

Ah, the Merrijigs Hotel site. When it was pulled down In the 50's they simply bulldozed it over the creek bank into the creek. Spent a couple of days detecting and bottle digging there in the late 90's. It had been well fossicked previously - holes & broken bottles all down the banks of the creek. They had also at some point widened the road right over the front part of where the Hotel buildings were.

The Big River Hotel site would be worth looking at. But by god you need a solid 4-wheel drive to get into there. Must have been the most desolate place to live back in the early days.

Progress Junction, which is at the foot of Globe Hill would be a good place to have a look. It had a sizeable Hotel there in the early days & quite a few houses etc. The school site is back towards Reefton about 1km away from the actual town site, off the road quite a bit.

The road & area between Progress Junction to Big River (Soldiers road, I think it is) had boarding houses, accommodation stops & settlements all along it. In the earlier days that road used to go right through to Waiuta, think its a walking track now. Not to mention all the Mines that were in operation through there. You really could spend a lifetime exploring up there

There's a fantastic book about Big River written a few years back by the late Les Wright.

Just a shame that the site of the Globe/Progress Mine site & immediate settlement have been wiped off the map forever:(
