I purchased this book off Trade Me some time ago to read the gold prospecting part of the story - very good - paints a vivid picture of what life was like and the techniques used. I don't tend to read books more than once so am flicking it on. Figured I'd give you forum members first chance before moving to stick it back on Trade Me.
Cost me $15 including postage - so I'm offering it for the same to anyone who'd like it. Just send me a private message / email if you're keen.
The book...
First published in 1953, this edition published in 1991.
Natural born writer of the first water and with lots to write about is Temple Sutherland. The fact that it is recommended as a book about a dog should not deter the most determined hater of dogs or of talk about dogs. It is worth the money without the dog at all, for it is the story of the attempts by the author and his wife to earn a living in wild country in New Zealand during the economic depression.
‘Mr Sutherland has the Highlander’s feeling for natural life. At one time he and his wife lived in a place where you had to choose between fishing and having trout, and hunting and having venison. When they moved to seek gold, their only chance of eating meat came with the visit of a man with supplies. But in this simple, natural life people and things were always dramatic and often humorous, and Temple Sutherland can tell his stories with simplicity and point. . . . The dog provides the humour and a very good dog he was, though not above a nightly struggle with the cat, at the word ‘bed’, for the position they both desired against the wall.
