Wishing I bought that GP3000 here

Will look at cheap SD2000 or 2100 as well but put off by the lack of iron reject on those ealier models.

Will consider complete or not, going or not.

A new series Minelab and a rivalling Garrett are coming out later this year (seen on overseas forum post). I think we've seen the last GPX now.

wouldn't bother buying a pi machine if you want to used iron reject on it better off getting a gold bug or xterra 70 with 6" coil if u want to use it for looking for gold and reject everything else

Bugger I see there's 2 BuySellSwap and this should be in gold, maybe someone can shift it this thread.

Element, have you given your newly acquired GPX5000 a go at iron reject? Does it cause any sensitivity loss or not stop iron junk? I'm surprised about that given the cheap VLF Ace150 seems to have no problem rejecting iron.
But GreenTater did post a month back suggesting also mistrust in using PI iron reject:
"I am using a GPX5000 and having similar problems. Having said that it does have an iron reject function that can be utilised. I have tried this and essentially it starts to make a tone and then just goes silent, this tells you by default that you are over a non target species. I was told never to utilise this function when looking for gold as it will decrease the sensitivity of the machine. As a consequence every outing in Aussie resulted in a mountain of bullets, nails, staples, hob nails and with any luck a bit of gold. So far here at home I have just assembled the piles of scrap and no gold to date." He did note that that was Ozzie conditions and was going to have a play again here.

Iron is a huge problem for gold hunting, and there is a big price difference between SD2000 and SD2100 and the later iron rejecting minelab PIs. I'm guessing xterra 70 is early version of minelab 705. I'm still unsure whether the 705 audio works the same as the PIs and eureka gold. What I mean is, does it have an "analog" audio response so tiny signals are audible, or just operate as a coin detector, giving a tone only above a certain strength of signal. To me, youd want the actual signal for gold.

My aim is to get a reliable iron rejecting PI for gold hunting. I don't think ground balancing is an issue in NZ? I would want to buy a SD2200d or v2, Extreme, GP3000 or above, or any GPX, if the iron reject works. Otherwise may as well buy cheaper SD2000 or 2100, as long as manual ground balance is suffient. All the Minelabs seem to have too few controls for my liking though, especially the SD2000 which has almost none!

From the Minelab website:

The Minelab SD2200v2 was released in April 2002 and is no longer in production. Minelab's SD2200v2 features Multi-Period Sensing (MPS) technology, the exclusive invention of Minelab, to give you depth, sensitivity and reliability. The SD2200v2 combines automatic ground balance, discrimination and automatic tuning to make it one of the world's most sophisticated and powerful gold detectors. The boost amplifier and tone control allow you to customize your detector, making hard to hear sounds clear and defined whilst the discrimination function rejects strong signals from ferrous junk, allowing more time detecting and less time digging unwanted targets.

May answer some of your queries.
Dont know where you will find one though.

this could be meaning strong gold signals not strong iron.. hence loss of sensitivity. Still valuable- after a few sluice race pieces its a real turn off without discrimination.

Ebay au have quite a few, mainly SD2200D not the blue v2, though postage and customs will hurt. SD2000,2100 cheaper but beware the lack of reject- might be OK for Otago but not West Coast

Is that new machines on Ebay?
I only found that Aussie company that will upgrade your detector for a large sum.

Hi, this may be of interest - an SD2000 http://www.trademe.co.nz...er/auction-614467524.htm

Older Minelabs come up on Trade Me regularly Prices vary from good to total fantasy. Using discrimination while detecting gold is most likely just going to severly limit the amount of small pieces of gold found. Not sure how the PI discrimination goes but on most vlf machines eliminating pull tabs also eliminates gold rings, it must be much easier to eliminate the half gram bits that kept me interested, focused and half grammers most days were all I could find anyway.
