Brief hunt at Arkles Bay beach after work today....several 1 and 2 dollar coins....then thought I would check out the rock pools....found several weights...then a strange signal not normally looking for on the beach..... 925 silver 1874 Shilling.....really clean.... Little worn from salt and sand but overall very good condition!

Strange find for Arkles Bay! Just under an inch of sand in the rocks beneath....

It was pretty much in a rock pool at low tide! Very odd....had only an inch of sand and a few rocks above it! So would have been immersed in salt water for a long time....maybe no air got to it?

my guess is someone lost it more recently than in the early 1900s as it would have some corrosion on it or salt stuck to it, if it laid in the spot you found it for 100 years or more it would be very corroded :) keep up the good work

Was just in a good spot i'd say, preserving nicely.

I once found a coin all encrusted in a thick salty green blob. Looked unrecoverable. Impatiently I hit it a couple of times with a rock to crack it open. Wo, bad move. Inside was a 1933 uncirculated NZ Shilling in mint condition still shiny like new. Not mint any more cause it had rock bash marks all over it now and i bent it too. Im still gutted.
How it survived in its original condition whilst being encrusted is beyond me.

Yip learnt another lesson the other day. Had most of my silver rings in a bag . I put this other plated ring in there too which i had previously soaked in CLR. Well, i opened the bag the other day and there was this black vegemite looking goo leaching over the rings. The goo had stripped some black tarnishes off and stained a few of my best. What a disaster.
Must of been some chemical reaction goin on there, lucky i checked them when i did.
Lesson, think before using CLR on finds.

Or rinse very well afterwards, giving the silver a good soak in water with bicarbonate of soda will help neutralise any acid left over from the CLR.

A while ago I stuck the majority of my silver rings into the tumbler using steel shot as a media. Figured if the manufacturers do it then it can't do much damage. The rings came up great! Much more polished and shiner then I could do by hand or even with a dremel. I only tumbled the more solid looking rings without stones though.

I resoaked the rings for 3-4 days in water and surprisingly i could smell the clr in the water still. Oops, dont do it again.
