Unscrew the headphones, the AT should then be working from its internal speakers.

1. If the problem still happens then there is a fault with the detector unit
If so then try with a different type and new batteries.

2. If it is fine on speaker then the fault is with the headphones.
If headphones only then the lead may not have been screwed in probably so refastening this may help.
Also check out the headphone volume knobs - i.e. is it half volume only on one headphone or both?

Once you know if it is the headphones or unit and if it keeps up you will know what part to send back to Garrett for a warranty claim.

Haven't heard of this problem, but I can't recommend the use of headphones enough. They let you hear a lot more information then the internal speaker does, some targets can be so quiet you won't hear them from the speaker but are obvious with the headphones. And with Pro Mode the range of the sounds is much larger with the headphones.

Personally I would say that the speaker not working properly is not a problem, learn to use and get used to wearing the headphones and your recoveries will increase. They are also great in stopping people coming up and bugging you - just point to the headphones and pretend you can't hear them! :)

could try pulling detector apart just the plugs and battery cover, sit it infront of fire over nite as they do condinsate from time to time, this the first thing i do if my detector starts playing up and it usually works, clean the plugs with a cotton bud before reassembly, worth a try
fiend hard and find all

Does it make any difference if you plug the ear phones back in then remove them?
The AT range use electrical resistance instead of a mechanical switch to switch between ear phones and internal speaker, make sure as latch said that terminals are clean and dry.

You could try a reset as well by turning on then holding power button for about 5 secs, think it's a double beep from detector to confirm reset.

I have to agree with Shilo you are missing soooooooooo much detail in the sound by using the internal speaker.

Should be right, just avoid detecting around the toilet block.......

In dodgey areas (like the whole of Rotorua!) I don't detect in the evenings when the low life's are around, but go in the very early hours of the morning when they have all passed out from what ever they were on.

True dat!

Won a trip to Rotorua a few years back went to the gardens, were only there a few minutes and heard a commotion, followed by a guy literally throwing another guy out of the toilets and proceeding to give him a dam good thumping. Can only assume someone dropped the soap. Christchurch isn't that bad, besides most of the places for people to hide have long fallen over. It's the unleashed dogs that concern me more.

Another good thing about earphones is you occasionally get away with ignoring people, pretending you can't hear them - bit rude but sometimes one interruption is all it takes to throw the flow.

The problem is it's not only you!
It's an interesting place beautiful and horrid all at the same time. All in all I enjoyed my weekend there and best of all it was free!
I guess the locals are a tight knit group as I did feel a little out of place there, they seemed to know we weren't from the area.

Didn't try detecting there knowing my luck I'd probably dig a hole in the wrong place and melt my face off.

Very close! I have often hunted around Kuirau Park (where that pic was taken) and although haven't dug up any new mud pools you have to watch it there after heavy rain as the pools overflow and some of the ground can get decidedly hot in spots....

But there is an old pool there called the Lobster Pool which was very popular in the 1800's for bathing. So far I haven't worked out which one of the existing pools it is but have detected around all the likely looking ones. Would love to search the bottom of it! Closest I have been to detecting in a thermal pool is Waiotapu bridge, Butchers Pool and of course Kerosene Creek (which is 35-40C so comfortable temps). Pic below of Kerosene and the type of finds in these places.....
