SycoToad and I don't always see eye to eye nothing nasty we simply express what we believe to be true. That said I am absolutely 100% behind him in this.

I went to a quiet little park on the weekend. Looked down to see a relatively fresh plug, scanned the plug and there was a target there. I could tell by the static click sound at the edge it was a screw top so I dug it and put it in my pouch - wow how hard was that ?!? The only time I will leave a target I have begun to retrieve is if it is very deep and I can't find it or if I decide more damage/mess would be done by removing it. There is NO reason not to remove bottle caps, cans etc.

What difference is there in not digging rubbish from the beginning? Well no one wants to spend there time hunting digging trash of course but for crying out loud if you find it, it's yours take it with you!

Same with filling in holes even at the beach leave the area in the best condition you can and saying it's ok the tide will fix it in my opinion isn't good enough it's inconsiderate and brings unwanted attention to the rest of us that put in the effort to keep this hobby going for as long as possible before some idiot ruins it for all of us.

Hey Toad,

I could possibly be the guilty party; bit of explanation: if I dig up trash, I carry it out end of story. And on that day I met you I carried out a heap of garbage (actually all I carried out was garbage and a bit of scrap). But if I find a target and start to dig, then realise it is something big like a can I don't keep digging. If the detector said 4 inches and I dig down to 6 inches and it still says 4 inches that pretty much guarantees its a can (or some other large chunk of crap). At that point I quit and move on. In parks I think this is a good policy because I don't feel the mess it makes justifies the retrieval, on the beach I guess it is more a matter of my not feeling like putting the time and effort into digging up cans. Anyway, I am sure I abandoned a dozen or so cans at the beach that day. But I kick sand back in the hole so I don't know. If people feel I am in the wrong here speak up, I would like to hear your opinions.

I can see Roberts point of view and to be honest I think that the twits who drank from the cans should take their rubbish with them. If everyone took their rubbish away then there would be no problem and the situation would not be compounded for the detectorists who more often than not take care to remove rubbish - but why are you at the beach - to find treasure? To collect everyone elses rubbish? or to compromise between detecting for goodies and removing a practical amount of rubbish without spoiling your day devoting your time to detect for trash as a civic service?

When it comes to cans it does not take many to become a cumbersome load and especially if you are walking a fair way - it might be a different kettle of fish with pull tabs, bottle tops etc as you can carry heaps without it becoming a chore to do so.

My thoughts:
If you uncover it then remove it.
If you give up before uncovering then of course it stays there - this would apply to junk or silver coins.

Digging up junk and not putting it into a bin is as bad the person who first littered. But if I come across a can on the surface or know it is a can and don't dig it then yes it stays there. Morally I should take them to a bin but if I did that then most of my time would be spent cleaning up the area instead of detecting. But if I dig it out then its mine even if it is junk and leaving it = littering.

On the plus side - most cans are obvious. If you get a nice tone and think it might be a can lift the coil 10" to a foot above the sand / soil. If it still registers then it will be a large item i.e. a can. Because of this it is only the very rare can that needs to be dug and there is no need to dig the majority of them.

What ever happens the hole should always be filled back in, even on the wet sand of a beach with the tide racing in. Many of times I've had joggers go between me and the tide edge and have wondered how easy it would be for them to sprain an ankle in an uncovered hole.

Looks like we are all pretty much on the same page - as we all know each hole can be different so it's up to us to make the best choice for that instance.

Robert I have often wondered what you tell your customers or suggest to them any guidelines?
Maybe we need a learner-restricted-full licence system *8^)
Sit down-shut up- watch this then you can have your detector!

Not that it's just newbies - there are some seasoned detectorists who are very set in their ways.

That is a good question; I usually don't tell anyone anything unless they ask. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to 'NZ detecting guidelines' into every box we send out.
