I know we are both vertically challenged but I think this is taking it toooo far!

Think I'd leave the original shaft intact and just make a new one out of that nice bright orange electrical conduit, you can shape it by heating it with a heat gun. to get the diameter right for the coil just heat around the tube and stretch it.

Right off to detect in the crawl space under the house j/k

Is that a fat joke? I'm not fat, that's just my year-round winter insulation!

Yeah GS I think it would be better suited to something cheaper but I'm sure the idea is valid for many different units where you can remove the control box.
