Overseas is the only place unless somebody is selling 2nd hand (but there are very few here in NZ). I have it written into my will to be buried with mine! I found that the cost of having one made up by an engineer was more then buying from below and I doubt it would have been as good.

I ordering from overseas, I highly recommend one of Ruslans: http://stavrscoop.com/en/8-sand-scoop. Don't underestimate the strength it will need to cope with wet sand digging, most of the cheap wire mesh ones can only cope with loose dry sand.

Yours really did look good, if you could make more I'm sure they would sell!

I totally fail to understand how anyone would be so silly to waste money buying from overseas when they can make one - Now that I have seen one I want one and tomorrow I will make one if its fine - I like the concept and the height of simplicity to make. Rather than weld it though I will rivet it together - not pop rivets but steel ones. The only time consuming part is boring the holes.

Have a look at what ever pattern you want to make it to, draw up dimensions to your pattern then use some good old Kiwi ingenuity.

For dry sand riveting would work. But with the weight of wet sand and with clay shell pebbles etc thrown in, believe me you will want to weld - also either very thick aluminum or good grade stainless otherwise it will wear out before you know it. 2 years of use has already seen my stainless scoop wear 1.5-2cm off the end. Design for the worse conditions and never have to replace it or design for perfect conditions and watch it break.....

Riveting would be as good as gold as it is a process I use often noting that I said steel rivets. Ironically enough when I used two large steel rivets to hold the blade on my drag hoe which I use to move gravel from the bedrock I found that some old steel rivets I had used were better than bolts! Milt bolts stretched then undid and High tensile ones snapped...and of course this always happened when I was about as far away form anywhere as I could be.

I have welding gear and yet chose rivets for much of my gear as I found that for the really heavy work I tended to do the welds tore before the rivets eventually wore through.

I certainly would not be using aluminium in sand as stainless steel will last a great deal longer. Even stainless steel has not lasted all that long on my drag hoe. I have been quite surprised how quickly it has worn.

On one of the first underwater dredges we have dating back to and used consistently since the 1960s the pop rivets my Uncle used are still holding it together whereas the one which was welded in entirety about the same time has had seams rewelded several times.

Being old fashioned and a person to make do I think that if I was going to be out and about a great deal I might tend to stelite the edges which I used to do with my steel draggers once upon a time. It was amazing hard stuff but I dont think you can get it anymore though I have enough for my own use...if I can find it!

the best way is to make one use it then modify if it doesn't work make it a tank, yes drilling the holes in the most time consuming part i spent atleast 30mins on the drill press, then spent another 30mins drilling more holes to get it right, alumuim does work if cleaned properly every time, this is what i ended up with.

yes I made one with pvc drain pipe (4mm thick,100mm dia)cut one end on 60deg angle other end flush with a end cap over it.Filled it with random 16mm holes.Thats it.No handle, less parts to break.

Works great in sand/stones.Just scoop out and wave over coil and when you get the tone shake shake shake.
