Bored at work so am researching!! Come across this- I woulda got me a monkey for 10s!!

Evening Post, April 1914.
Wainoni Park, near Christchurch, known for several years past as an open-air pleasure resort, was offered for sale by auction recently. The property was first submitted as a going concern, but the best bid received was £30,00, at which figure it was passed in. The movables on the property were then disposed of. Chief interest centered in the disposal of the menagerie. All the animals and birds were sold, the principal buyer being Mr. J. J. Boyd, who was acting for the Onehunga Zoo. Prices received for the principal lots were; Malayan bear £3. Japanese bear 1 £5, twenty-two monkeys 10 shillings each, three black wallabies £1 each, two kangaroos £5, rat kangaroo £1, golden pheasant £3, black lemur £2, African monkey £1.
There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!

Very interesting indeed as I am sure that each of these animals now would cost many thousands in some cases and many hundreds in others.
I noted the price for the Monkeys and that reminded me of a book I read recently where the Chinese commonly called the soldiers of a certain enemy country 'Little Yellow Monkeys' - it wasn't good me reading that in the book as I now look at photos of that particular race and yes indeed all the males do look like monkeys and in their case I think I would rather have the ten shillings!

Enough of that! The prices seem ridiculously low even for that era and especially for the bears. An average weekly wage in those days for a plumber was 3 pound in New Zealand and I am sure that it would not be possible to obtain a Malayan Bear for a plumbers weekly wage today or a monkey for one days wage...In Australia the Manufacturing Industry average wage was 49s 3d weekly or just under 10/- daily

I think that his monkey made a monkey of him in Germany and got seized didnt it because Dustbin couldnt produce a health certificate for it. In view of the failure to provide a health certificate the Monkey became German 'National property' and now resides at Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, Germany where it will live with other Capuchin Monkeys and presumably enjoy more intelligent conversation with others of its kind rather than put up with Dustbin's tantrums.

And for those who wonder how I know these things it comes from having 16 year old daughters!

It's strange hearing about the old currency with the crazy fractions, best I can do is remember when a popsicle was 20cents.
