Hi, I done some crevising last weekend and cleaned out crevise with a scraper and crevise pump when i noticed what i initially thought was a gold vein but was a pyrite vein ( dam it all )i followed one a little way to a junction and was hoping to find a bit of gold there but found only a empty cavity with a very thin layer of maybe quartz around it(bugger again!!)

Is this a good indicator to dig round a bit more next time out ?

Cheers

Veins of pyrite are a common occurrence in quartz. It's a 50/50 chance to get gold with quartz around.

Hardrock gold veins are very hard to come by. Make sure there is evidence of gold bearing gravels in the area by panning out some of the flood areas. If the area is known for gold keep up the hard work of crevicing. If you can, find a crevice that runs parallel to the runoff. Hopefully it's packed with gravel and you can use a screwdriver and hammer to break it up. Scrape it out and process. Move around as much as possible.

Here's a picture of placer gold I found last week in a crevice that dropped down parallel in the South Fork of the American River.

Thanks Irodgers, ronincolin sorry about late reply have not been online for a while, good info.
Had a crevice nearby and found a few colours, have not had time to get out again for a few months though.

Ronincolin was all that gold in just one crevice, cheers for picture.
