worked out what i was doing wrong
A 5 day work trip turned out to be 3 days work and 2 days fossicking, one day sniping with friend from queenie and one day on the detector.

awsome weather and low flows made for good sniping conditions. We had a full day sniping, in the water at 8.30, the overnight frost made the water a bit cool in the morning and the sun really never gets in there untill much later on in the day, typical queenstown streams, steep and cold.

The above two phots show 4.5 grams by lunchtime, i took video of the place so my sd card became quickly full so could not photo all finds.

all up 8.3 grams for the day between us which was pretty good for a stream that has been done to death.

UserPostedImage

next day the detector was bought out mind you i was pretty keen to get back into the water.

all up got 6 pieces from a small drainage area,

UserPostedImage

The bigger ones are 3 and 3.1 grams, then 2.8, 2.4 and 1.8, the other smaller bit was a .5 gram

UserPostedImage

I have some unfinished business with that drainage ditch and another alonside, but they will have to wait till next time. the detectors do seem to get the bigger gold.

cheers

Sounds like a few good days there mate. What sort of detector are you running? Nice pictures of some equally nice nuggets you have there. by drainage ditch you sureley dont mean a man made ditch?
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Nice one Starflash. Well done. Nice smooth water worn nuggets. Not like the Shooty ones I got. Obviously a different source & laid down differently. Any quartz attached??

Happy hunting

JW :)

Hey starflash, out of curiosity...

Do you get way off the beaten path for these spots or are they quite accessible?

hi eagle

i only used my 15x12 minelab mono this time, was working a treat and was running out of time, but i will have to go back over the area with different coils just to be sure i left nothing behind.

hi jw

nah no quartz at all, they were very water worn mind you a couple of the bits were actually fairly rough on the other side.

hi gavin

nah this time i was short on time so traveled no further than 20min from queenstown, all very close to humans suprisingly

Its amazing whats still being found so close to Queenie.

Starflash I like to run my 3500 on deep mode except when searching shallow bed rock areas, how about you?

i run mine in normal deep for most places, and normal shallow for bed rock, do you find sensitive shallow can produce false signals in the small mono coils. i have spent alot of time chasing phantoms with the 8 inch mono on sensitive shallow?

Hi starflash
I get this problem also when using my 10x5 mono coil in shallow & sensitive modes with the 3500 when searching bedrock. The threshold becomes unstable, however it is very sensitive to small gold.
I have said this before, the gp3500 kicks arse.

any chance of seeing the video? does this forum allow videos or just photos? love to see some underwater sniping. or does the vid give the local away? could always edit it a bit so only underwater. need to see some more gold on this forum. too many coins at present. coins interest me but its a bit hard to hit too many likely coin places around here. either too public or too many busybodys.
