Hi Jeff,

Even if you are just starting out and do not want to spend a lot of money, you should still get a 'real' metal detector rather than a junky Chinese toy. All the major manufacturers have a basic model that does not have all the features of their top end units, but are still very capable machines and lightyears ahead of the trade-me junk. These typically cost $350-$400. I would recommend that you get a Fisher F2 (because I sell them) but Minelab, Whites, and Garrett all make quality equipment. Sometimes you can find a good used unit because people like DrunkBrother are rotating the collection of detectors in their quiver, or simply upgrading to a higher end model. Oh, and beware of Chinese copies that seem to be plaguing the internet.

I recommend a Fisher F2 3 coil package from a dealer who sells more than one brand -

It will cost you no more than $400 delivered to your door -

Send me a message if you would like to know the process for buying internationally -

Finally, we NZ, are China's first western free trade partners - We have sacrificed hundreds of kiwi's lives just to try to obtain the same from the USA - We have a strong working history with the Chinese gold prospecters here in NZ - Not so much with the US -

IMO it matters not what your swinging when you are starting out, just as long as you are having fun

To those who rubbish the Chinese & their products - WAKE-UP the seventies want you back

Watch that exchange rate, you really need to keep it under NZ$400 otherwise tack on another ninety something dollars towards our politicians morning tea fund.

~whispers go F4~ If you do don't import you will actually get it cheaper from the NZ Dealer.
Me and ST have different opinions on this, either way you get a great machine.

Remember to leave some funds for a pin pointer, it will make your finds recovery time much quicker and far less frustrating.

There isn't a massive difference in the machines - They are both very good and for the price make the other brands entry level machines look a little yellow (bad Garrett joke). They are both easy to use the F2 is turn on and go where the F4 takes a very small amount more setup being the ground balance which is nothing once you have done it a few times - This is a primary advantage over the F2 as in theory you should be able to go deeper in more soil types with less chatter and better target ID. The other advantage is the 11" DD coil, you can cover more ground quicker. The smaller coils are better around the likes of swings and trees where there will most likely be plenty of rubbish.

thats correct - either one of the Fisher F2/F4's would be just fine

Now its just a matter of finding the best deal -

Crikey - look at this ---- http://www.trademe.co.nz...er/auction-596151831.htm

Now that could be a bargain lol
