Hi, interesting forum, very informative and a pleasure to read.

I've been detecting since January in the Auckland area I must admit it has taken over more of my life than I expected. I usually go out by myself but have a couple of friends who join me occasionally, Garthy and Ritchie. We have mini competitions and spend a great deal of time dreaming up possible sites to search. The initial time I spent in the field is nothing to the time I now spend planning and researching possible hunts. Enjoying history, it is not a chore to read about earlier times in Auckland. Even plotting a series of parks for a run is fun. Now the weather has softened the ground there are several sites we plan to be visiting.
I use a Cobra Beach Magnet which I got on the back of Garths ATPro, 'a buy one get one cheap' deal. I have no complaints with the Cobra, it has worked well and I have just about paid it off with the spending I have found. Not too much in the way of Jewellery but a few interesting pieces. I write up our adventures on my blog Metal Detecting Adventures which I also enjoy doing.

A couple of questions:

I would like to ask if anybody knows where I can access historical Auckland maps online?
Are there any clubs out West Auckland/Rodney way?

With the weather looking so good this morning we are off to check out the fruits of my research. Garth and I are heading off to a small area cut adrift by a motorway but in it's day was used by hundreds of people each day for many years.

See you out there!

Do a search on images on this site: http://natlib.govt.nz/. Also a good site for any historical references to your area (including old photo's, newspaper clips etc).

Also not exactly old but could be very handy is Google Earth (not Maps - the Earth program). Hit the history button on the top menu and you can zip back to the 1960's for the north shore area. Good way to find out if parks and public land have been changed much over the last 50 years.

Thank you for the information.I have tried the Google Earth history facility but it only seemed to go back 10 years over the part of Auckland I was checking. I'll have another look. Thanks again.

Do the research.....reap the rewards.

Of late, I've found a heap more old stuff by using as many research tools as I can find, for an area I am interested in hunting.
My last big hunt of an area of interest, was done as a result of some fairly intense historic research. It ended up netting me 26 victorian and NZ silvers (my best ever result) over the space of a 7 hour hunt. Pic's on my "number8 on the prowl" page in 'Show, tell and identify'

Research, research, research............that's where it's at!

Happy Hunting.

Apart from the joy of being out on such a beautiful day it turned into a bit of a fizzer. Research was good but area had been filled I think, so no luck. Plus I had an ailing mate in tow. Details on blog.
Always tomorrow, I hope the weather holds out..
