Hello, I have always been fascinated by relic metal detecting and am now considering taking it up as a hobby.
As I know nothing about what gear to buy where to go, or even if this really is for me, I was wondering if anyone would let me accompany them on a search for a few hours or a day perhaps ?
Then I could get a feel for the hobby and pick up some basic tips.
I thought it might be better if I did that, rather than go spending a couple of thousand on Trademe without any basic knowledge etc ?

Thanks kindly if possible. I am in the Auckland or Hamilton areas.
Happy to contribute some funds for your time.

It is a shame that you are not down in the friendly south as you could have accompanied my son and I on an outing looking for a little gold and for coins and relics there are also some really decent fellows down here who are forever obliging.

Is the 1942 an indication of age or interest? The reason I ask is the Military items just happens to be an interest of mine as long as it isnt post WWII.

If you do decide to buy a detector then I am sure that you wont regret it BUT do buy wisely.

Hello Lammerlaw, nice to meet you. No I am just a young 42 year old !
I am a military history buff. My dream is to go on dig in Russia one day.
I would be in seventh heaven unearthing helmets and equipment on the ex-Eastern front !!

I really want to buy wisely but have no idea what to get.
My interest would be in finding coins and relics under earth here in NZ.

Perhaps you could suggest a particular model of detector on Trademe that would be suitable for a beginner ?
Preferably one that I could resell fairly easily if I decide it is not for me.

Military History - golly gumdrops!

Right now my foot rest is a 20mm Oerlikon Anti Aircraft gun - I kid you not and within reach a TSMG - an original 1921 and just across the other side of the table a Bren.

Yes my dream has been to go to Russia to pillage and dig things up but not so much dig up as 'dredge' up. - wholesale. Just this afternoon I was making a look alike fuse pull wire for a spare German Egg bomb I have here and only last night I said to someone else that I am thinking of building up a collection of Russian medals...they are a good bet as most of the good ones were actually gold, silver and gold plated or silver.

I also collect military history books.

Go Fisher, more bang for buck for the cheaper detectors.
Don't buy from TradeMe unless it is a well known brand.
It takes time to learn your machine and digging technique, there is plenty of frustration. You just need to work through it to get the rewards.

Hi Keith

I still have the big safe full of them plus two lockers and a small safe so not all displayed - yep - its too small but I love it - Ruth lives at the opposite end of the house and I live in my new room but shes allowed to come in if she makes an appointment.

I have displayed what I wanted to though and the other guns are mostly duplicates or my hunting guns - duck shooting coming up so I might spend a few days in Canterbury over the next few weeks.

Sounds great - I dont get as many ducks as I could - never had a limit bag yet - mostly because I pluck them as I get them.
I have never told you about the Pukekos between Ahaura and Totora Flat have I? Next time I see you I will tell you...something to do with the Statute of Limitations as we dont have one!

Hi Fran1942, welcome to the forum. Yes it pays to do some homework before lashing out big bucks on a detector. You can purchase a Fisher F2 from members here on the forum. A neet machine at a low cost. This will get you started. I will pm you some details.
Have you seen the Show ''War Digs'' on sky, cool show.

Good luck out there.
