They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Good one Andy - I lost three great Uncles in WWI and WWII, had two other uncles plus Dad overseas during the WWII (Dad got another medal for his war service this year - a bit late for most of the guys!) two other great uncles overseas in WWI and II, lost three second cousins overseas in WWII and one Grandfather overseas in WWI and another grandfather who was an American had false papers and served in the British Navy prior to WWI and was in the NZ army in WWI.

All these guys deserve to be remembered and especially those who are still there.

The poor old Merchant navy never ever did get the same recognition as the military units, Army, Airforce and Navy. In WWI they were recognized with a special medal The 'Merchant Navy Medal' and its a beauty...nice medal.

I had an old neighbour at Waikouaiti who was in the London rifle Brigade in WWI so he had Squeek and Wilfrey and in WWII was in the British Navy - He was captured by the Japanese who gave him aresholes - his WWII medals were 1939 - 45 Star, Atlantic Star for serving in the Atlantic where he was on Convoy duties at one stage and also the Burma Star as he was with the navy there. He also had the War Medal - 6 medals in all - I have them here.

The merchant Navy guys had some harrowing times and especially in the Russian convoys with the enemy and the elements to contend with.

With the exception of last year I have seen my uncle on TV for several years previously laying the wreath on behalf of D company of the Maori Battalion at the Cenotaph in Wellington.

Both Dads brothers were pillagers of the topmost order and every time my surviving uncle sees me he gives me a medal or two which he had acquired, pillaged or otherwise got hold of when he was oversea and he aint run out yet.

These men are so young, the two flag holders on the right just finished this year serving with the Army in Afghanistan.
