It's been a few months since I've visited the Forum as I rejoined the workforce when I got back from the talkfest in Lawrence. It's really great to see that others have been out there doing it and getting their just rewards.
I just had to take advantage of the low water flows last weekend and popped up to a Coromandel creek for a bit of a poke around. Well bugger me if I didn't stumble upon Peoplesman and a couple of his mates from Auckland doing the same thing.
Being in a "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" frame of mind, here's what I ended up with for the day.

Great going - I love it - I never get sick of looking at gold and it is really ace to see others having some success getting out there and doing it. Coromandel is a part of the country I have always wanted to visit and pillage but never got there - I did a big OE once - got as far as Rotorua then turned around and came home.

Look forward to seeing some more.

I dont think so somehow but I bet theres a fortune in coins below the bridge at Whakawerawera so theres a challenge for a diver with a good underwater detector!

Come on Andy - you've seen me find gold in Rotorua! :)

The geology is too young for natural gold here though, need to wait for a couple more million years then the springs would have finished depositing it. There is trace gold coming up in the geothermal activity but not enough to mine or produce nuggets etc.

Would love to use the detector around Whakawerawera but no way we would ever get permission!

Nice gold! :)

Interesting to see all the silver looking pieces you found and a wee tiny reddish grain too?

Bloody hell Gary, good going, sure beats what I found last time I was up the Tararu Creek.
Love to meet up sometime and make a day or a weekend of it.
Cheers, John

Went back up the creek on Friday to beat the rain that was expected this weekend.
Moved some rocks and clay from about 3 square metres of bedrock and then sucked up these little bits.
Just over 3g in total.

Got back to the creek for a bit of a scratch around a couple of weeks ago. Found zilch for the first couple of hours, trying to clear out under a rock that turned out not to be sitting on bedrock.

Managed to suck up a few bits from another spot, but obviously also obtained a bit of mercury, which rather spoilt the appearance.

Cooked it up on the primus to get rid of the mercury and it looked much better.

The ones covered in Mercury are interesting and could well be an indication of more - where did the mercury originate from - was there a stamper a little way up the stream? If so then it would pay to work your way up to where the site of that stamper was and maybe more Amalgam might be found and the closer toward the stamper site the more of it.

Just an idea and a possibility.

I believe there was a stamper further up the creek, but I have yet to get there. I really don't want to find the mercury, it's just a bloody nuisance having to cook it off. On this occasion, the gold came up quite clean, but previously it has turned out slightly discoloured; not too bad a problem to have to deal with though.

Went for a wander up Waiomu way. I see Doc has thrown some bridges across the stream so the tourists don't get their Reeboks wet when they walk up to look at the kauris.

One plus is that some of the scrub has been cleared from the Monowai battery so you can get a better idea of what remains.

The further up the Paroquet stream you climb, the smoother the rock becomes. It turns into a series of waterfalls, 1m to 3m high and so slippery.

UserPostedImage

The total for the day was this bit. I placed it beside a massive matchstick to give a sense of scale.

Thanks for showing those pics, I haven't been up there for over 20 years - used to work in the camp before it got washed away. Have you taken a look up the Zeehan (next small stream on) as I reckon that has a lot of potential, I've mineral hunted there but never fossicked for gold.

Gidday Shilo, If you mean the Pohue, that the Zeehan mine and battery are located on, no it is one place I have never been to. That was a real bad day when the camp last got flooded, it is no more.
