This is a british half penny, can anyone tell me why the coin was cut to shape the face?

This coin I think is a medalet for the 2000 nz riders in the boer war, it has a wee hole at the top.
It says 'success to our New Zealand rough riders' around the horse with the date '1900' at the bottom. It has a golden sheen to the background of the rider.

On the back of the coin it has '1899 British Transvaal war' with '1900' at the bottom

Can anyone give me some info on one of these coins?

A good question an done to which I would like an answer as well - maybe whimsy - may have been a guy in the trenches during WWI just whiling away time creating a bit of 'trench art' out of a penny - wonder what the date is?

In any case it is an interesting find and well worth keeping in the treasure collection..

Yep, agree with Lammer, the first item is a simple example of trench art.
No idea on the second one.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

Hi Nztrolley, Your Boer War medal is indeed a Commemorative medalette produced to commemorate the success of NZ Rough Riders in the Transvaal War of 1900. It is rated as an R3 (not scarce but not common either) in the Leon Morel "Medallic Commemoratives of NZ" book, R1 being very common to R7 being extremely rare (1-3 known to exist). It was produced in three different metals, silver (R5), Gilt (R3 as I think yours is) and copper (R3). In good condition it is worth around $25.00 NZD at current market value.
An awesome find, as is the "trench art" half penny. Well done.

Nice finds Nztrolley. My first thought on the half penny was that it was cut in two, is there another half/piece out there somewhere.
