I'm trying to find the best shovel for digging plugs (the Lesche digging tool is a bit small for deeper stuff). Does anyone have thoughts on the best shovels? I have looked at the Lesche Sampson, cool stuff on predatortools and 'entrenching tools' and am unsure what would be most appropriate.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I think digging tools in parks should be as small as practical and so I only use a Lesche turf tool.
A shovel or spade of any sort is bound to create the wrong impression or cause concern.
If you cant retrieve a find with a Lesche then leave it there.

I would be a bit nervous with anything larger than a lesche hand tool for land work. I use a miners pick on mud flats, as it gets into the rocks among the mud and a cheap miners shovel from mitre 10 for beaches.

So has anyone used an entrenching tool? They usually fold into a very small size, but am unsure if they'd be any use for MDing.

I think they break as too much leverage on the handle when digging soil..
When I started detecting I got the strongest garden trowel I could find and sharpened the tip and one edge with a file.Worked fine on cutting plugs.

I use a small shovel from the red shed as well....it has been grinded down on the sides to give it a small point sort of tear droped shape.

works great for deeper targets..will post pic later.

agree a Lesche or trowel for parks - however OP was looking for small shovel for plugs ;)
