HI welcome to the forum, I am also from the bay. I'm in Dunedin, there is a few good spots up danseys pass that are kid friendly. On the south side of the pass is a reserve called German creek, Doc camping---long drop toilet and five minutes walk to the Dansey Pass hotel. You can sit at your camp site and watch the kids in the creek and there is colour all through the gravels up and down the creek--8 grams aday hard out with a sluice box . ITs a bit late in the season now, but next summer keep in touch and a trip can be organized up the creek

also if you go to the danseys pass holiday park it is very kid friendly and you dont need permission to pan there.....i also beleave you dont need perrmission to pan up at the creek by the hotel ...with you 3 year old you will have to keep an eye on him at the holiday park incase he gets into the small rapids....but i got around that with my 3 year old by creating a pool for him by putting the big rocks i was digging up into a circle so he had his pool to play in and i could keep panning and we both enjoyed it...lol
