Where the pic - always nice to see a photo of 'Wilfrey'- a shame the lawn mower monstored it but still a good thing to find - Methinks you had been go and find its mate 'Squeek' as he might be lost there as well and if you had extraordinary luck then you might even get 'Pip' but to have been awarded 'Pip' then the recipient had to have been serving in Gallipoli or on the Western Front in 1915.
None the less a great find - good going.
As for the 'Pip, Squeek and Wilfrey' - they were Cartoon Characters of a Cartoon Strip in the British 'Daily Mirror' from 1919 right up to the mid 1950s
After the war the three main medals were affectionately known as 'Pip, Squeek' and 'Wilfrey' after these cartoon characters.
In the photograph I have put here you can see the three medals - with 'Pip' - the 1914 - 15 Star on the left, 'Squeek' - the British War Medal which is the only solid silver one in the middle and 'Wilfred' the Victory medal on the right.
You can also so another star similar to 'Pip' but this star is far scarcer - it is the 'Mons' Star or '1914 Star' - Only four New Zealanders got it officially though there may have been other New Zealanders serving in British Units who got it who have been long since forgotten. Of the four New Zealanders to get the Mons Star - two were women! Two New Zealand Officers got it BUT they were attached to British units and were not part of the NZEF or New Zealand Expiditionary Force'
