Just wait for the Alpine fault to go, then all us Southies are in business.

Interesting - I enjoyed reading that - the time factor concerning the Alpine Fault concerns me somewhat as I dont think I have time on my side!

30% chance in the next 50 years apparently - So as dependable as the science is I'll do a Ken Ring and say 95% chance in the next 3 weeks.
also if you believe everything you read the Waimakariri in Chch could shift again, wow fun times are a coming.

Think I'd rather be back in Chch when it all goes down - this place (Dunedin) worries the heck outta me with it's huge brick buildings and hills, it will make the Abbotsford Landslide look like a joke.

Oh well no point being worried, can't change what will be, just be prepared as you can I guess. Unfortunately I don't think the Chch earthquakes taught anyone outside the area anything. ~sigh~

Those statistics for fault ruptures aren't meant to be accurate at predicting quakes, they're determined from historical return periods which themselves vary a lot. In fact if you look at the average return period on the main segment of the alpine fault I'm pretty sure its overdue. And the Waimakariri, if it weren't for the river protection and constant excavation, would shift out out of its current channel and flow through town.
