Here is a instructional video showing how to recover objects from below grass without damaging the turf, using probe/screwdriver and slit cutting.

Hat tip to Guardian for finding the video

The slit cutting method is so far the best way i have seen to recover coins etc. from a public park. I will use that method from now on. Even so i am still a bit worried that a Police officer on a bad hair day could class the Lische digging tool as an offensive weapon. Anyway, i will be back coin hunting as soon as the ground gets a bit softer, so the grass has a chance to recover.

The probe and screwdriver technique is useful. An addition was to heat and bend the tip of the screwdriver up a bit. I used to follow the probe down and angle up under the object then lever it out. The probe I made was a golf ball that I drilled a small hole into then glued a 8 - 10" length of brass rod into it. The end of the rod was rounded over. Never scratched a coin with it. The slit method works pretty good too but then I got lazy and just dug holes in the ground.

I have two icecream container lids in my hunting kit, one for earth to go on and the other I can use to kneel on. Saves the knees from acorns, rocks etc.

Happy hunting and small holes.
