There's a good chance I'm going to be heading down to Q'town for the rest of the week to take a break from Chch, so if any of you guys down that way fancy catching up for a coffee / beer or even a scratch around let me know ;)

Always nice to meet people from the forums in person :)

gavin - i might be able to head out if you do come down this way.

give me a yell if you do.

what sort of prospecting are you thinking of?

i have a sluicebox and a detector.

what's the best way to contact you?

i am on-call with work. this is usually in the afternoon so i can usually sneak out most mornings. if you are about in the weekend i can put in a full day or 2 probably so could travel a bit further.

any places in mind you want to head to?

gold all over the place down here so endless possibilities!

Still not getting online a lot so sorry for the late reply...

Starflash - no worries - another time ;)

Simon - I'll send you a PM with my mobile number so you can ring / text me if you're up for a mission. I'm pretty flexible and think I'll be around till Mon at least (maybe longer). I've got all my toys - sluice box and metal detector with me so open to anything. Though I wouldn't mind a go with the detector. Got some vague ideas of where might be good to go, but a bit of local knowledge would be even better ;) Always worried about venturing in somewhere where I'm stepping on some locals toes.

Gavin, as long as you get permission from the landowners, then you shouldn't have to worry about "stepping on anyone's toes".

What the locals WILL get pissed off, and HAVE been getting annoyed about recently is people not asking permission to detect on property, then having that property being shut up for everyone, as has been the case on a well known and large station that covers some great gold ground in the QT area.
The problem that local detectorists, and I also, have with this is that it stuffs things up for EVERYONE which is a bloody shame. :( The actions of a few ruin it for everyone else, and gives gold prospectors a bad name.
So if in doubt, call in a few houses until you find who the land owner is.
If it's DOC land, just go for it, but don't publicise the fact that you're detecting on their land too much, and make sure you fill all your holes neatly

Cheers nzgold - caught up with Simon yesterday and he was a great source of local knowledge - gave me a tonne of potential spots and also highlighted the issue with access. Seems there's a lot of good spots I can easily access open to the public ;)

Also caught up with another guy down here last night who was out detecting with friends that day and came back with a few nice nuggets for their troubles (a couple at 7 grams). They'd just been getting away from the water up some public footpaths.

Simon - cheers for showing me around the other day. Enjoyed checking out a few spots around Skippers. If you're ever up this way give me a shout and I'll return the favour ;)

Back in Chch now and have power back which makes things a bit easier. Think water is still another 3 weeks away though but lots of friends around who have offered showers, laundry etc. so all good.

Hey Gavin, why don't you swap the house for a campervan! You can then escape Christchurch, and you've got everything you need, well minus the laundry, but then there are plenty of rivers around. You could then also fossick to your heart's content. lol

I got super shock absorbers on mine [and 4WD for the rougher roads], which should cope well with any aftershocks. But seriously, hope you manage fine in CC.

Frame of mind is a lot better after the week away and getting power back :) Too many toys mate - won't all fit in a campervan! :P

Think I'm heading in to the bush again next week to further clean out spot X I've found which is yielding some nice gold :) Only got 2.8 grams last time but can go directly to spot this time and hopefully find more in less time!

Hi nzgold, no - still no joy with the detector I'm afraid. But didn't give it a good go in Q'town - just a little play in a few of the spots. Think I need to head away from the water if I'm going to give detector a proper go.
