Hey mate I'm one of those DIY guys too and have spent hundreds of hours in the shed creating I call it but the wife calls it something else lol I have found that boxes tend to vary depending on type of ground you are working but I have a keen box now (xmas pressie) and the old boy I go with has a small box made out of flat tin with inch by inch timber square riffles and to be honest there is probulary bugger all difference at clean up time working the same ground all day so I guess I would say go and create its half the fun I reackon

He had ribbed rubber mat on the bottom then the back three quarters had expanded mesh over it then the riffles at the front I think there was 8 of them also with the rubber under them they all slid in under a rail witch wedged everything in not the best design I don't reackon but It works and also good for seeing if there is anything in your sluice also works much better in low flow areas than my keen box or any I have built
