Looking for some idea's on what detector would be the best at detecting small Gold jewellery.

Had a recovery job passed to me from kiwijim, was a small 9ct white gold earring about the size and shape of your little finger nail and was horse shoe shape with a few Diamonds and may have been Rhodium coated due to being shiny

Right, went there with a E-Trac and shaggy came along with his new CTX3030 but both detectors along with 2 pin pointers showed a total inability to even see the other earring even after trying various settings

Yesterday kiwijim who was back in Tauranga for a few days tried with his X-Terra 705 which has the ability of seeing small gold, still nothing and no pinpoint either
The 3 pin pointers used were Pistol Grip,Pro-Find and Pro-Pointer

Any idea's would be appreciated

One idea is that the ear ring is plated plastic.

I had a lady asking lots of questions at the beach one day.
She took off her expensive looking white gold ring and put it on the ground as she
wanted to see what it read as. I swung the coil over it on all metal and zilch
response. Her partner was looking on and I decided in the split second to blame my machine rather than
start a discussion about the quality of the ring he gave her. :-)

Given the description, a propointer should at least go off when it's sitting against it, I think you might be right.

The Chinese are producing fake U.S. silver dollars that just have a thin coat of silver on the outside. I wouldn't put it past them producing 9ct stamped jewellery that has very little metal content.

They should take the ear ring to a valuating jeweller and get it properly tested and if it ISN'T what it was sold as, to head for the commerce commission.

If only a PI machine will find it then the pistol probe should find it shouldn't it ?
From what I've seen the Pro find is better than the Garrett on very small gold.

When I was at school we made sterling silver rings and stamped them .925 so I'm sure MOST of the cheap jewelery off e-bay is plated or probably just a polished alloy of some sort.

Unfortunately it's getting harder to find the real thing these days as everything seems to be copied.

Even the pistol probe isn't exempt http://mcd.en.alibaba.co...held_Metal_Detector.html
