For some bourgeoisie, the image of a kept lawn is a statement of wealth and power. This is no different to the pretend upper class of today as they believe that it is their money keeping the areas pristine and our hobby of history unearthing is an attack on them, creating a sense of resentment, that we are enjoying freedom so much and might make some pocket money from it. They then think they have the right to use aggression to defend their puritanical, bourgeois ideas of having a pretty bit of grass to look at on their time off "earning a living".

Most people I have meet in the short time I have been hunting are locals who use the are regularly and are very supportive informing me of the history of the place etc. They have usually never seen a metal detector at work and i will let them wear the headphones, they are interested and supportive, wising me to find a piece of history or treasure. Then there are them whom star at me from the corner of squinting eyes and smile a conniving grin betraying their real inner thoughts, and through words or action, these people make us aware of their true natures, and we soon learn to avoid contact, and it is best not to respond to their straw grabbing about permission from councils and consents etc as it is likely they do not practice what they preach and stems from jealousy.

Keep under the Radar as much as you can and happy hunting

Good to go give those kids a good kick up the Ass, like back in Lammerlaw's younger days, i know it's what kept/keeps me in line.

From what I've seen Most do a dam fine job with refitting there plugs, but i have seen a few that would give us all a very bad name.
I feel we pay ten fold with tax's and rates, to pay for a little dead grass....

But yer it wont be to long before sum one's up on there high horse, with bloomers all bunched up n twisted deep in their crevice.
Wounder if I'll be alive to see the NZDLR, (New Zealand Detectorists Law & Regulations) Haha hope not.

Darn those Metal Detector's holes.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3437EtZD6cI

Your so right in this, my Granddad was a "kept lawn is a statement of wealth and power" fella, i myself must portray grate wealth, with my messy 20 odd cord of firewood trashing what was A+ manner cured lawn,,,Barhahaha

Just a stupid thought, however, why doesn't one of us draft a submission of codes of conduct (laws) one that has our interests put first, get a petition going, submit it and have a crack at getting it passed. Like I said probably just a stupid idea.

Id take a rough guess and say by the time that ordeal is over we will all be shut down or locked up...
Maybe not.

well if they dont have to hide their damage then why do you?
hobby or not detecting parks etc is all for personal/monetary gain its no different then if you were to be out in the hills detecting gold i dont see why it is exempt from getting a consent or access permission its still public land, the fact that you "disguse your holes" makes one think that you know what you are doing is frowned upon and shouldnt be doing it.

"their damage" = no-one goes out to intentionally damage anything

"all for personal/monetary gain" - how much trash have you picked up this year & how much did you get paid for it?

perhaps if you loosened the tension around your joystick a little to pick up a metal detector & give it a go - you never know, you may just like it .......................................... but hey, you can always go back to stabbing the cat in ya lap

I never get any tension in my joystick because my wife deprives and refuses any conjugal or what ever you call it rights and thats why I troll sites like this all the time when I am at home and not out in the hills digging holes, shooting holes or blowing holes.

As for metal detecting - if it is in a park or where ever else there is neatly manicured grass it is common sense to obliterate all sign of your passing in order to draw as little attention to your activities as you can. This in turn gives less opportunities to whingers, whiners and conceited self righteous sanctimonious narks to complain and the lesser the complaints the longer the game can be played.

Remember that there are a lot of potential Hitlers, Gestapo, Kempai Tai and other slime balls out there who get enjoyment and satisfaction of depriving others of fun and freedom - just dont give them a chance.

Gosh haha dont get me started about councils !
I could just see our council getting into permits, they love money so much!
I used to get into 4 Wheel driving with the Wellington 4WD Cross Country Club and, as the sport became more popular the council gated up more and more of the "public access" land.

I try to get on well with the park ranger and when he comes over I always show him my trash bag first :). Plus I hand in any keys I found.

If I hear people coming I try to avoid letting them see me "digging" too, as you guys say; it only takes a few self serving fun hating, ass licking, sad, pillicks to ruin it. Of course they don't have the guts to say it to your face but, go behind your back.
So I just try to remember the spot and keep scanning with the detector or take a drink of my water bottle lol I guess i fail at Stealth but I try :).
I must admit I like the idea of early morning hunts too.

Haha I see the crazy hardcore Germans (I think its the OKM Rover ) are already bringing out those stealthy metal detectors, that look like "trendy" walking sticks which upload the data and details to a smart phone via blue tooth or something like that . Reminds me of the games played by car "radar detectors" companies and users. They haven't been able to ban them yet despite the authorities dislike of them :)

Mr sycotoad - you said this
'you might not be a prick in the hole at the park, but I am sure your a right prick in the hole at home, on a good night, if your lucky :)) lol'

I am not quite so sure how to take that - it appears to have ambiguous meanings - but I sure can be a right prick...when crossed.
As for holes at home - being part gypsy I just happen to be a bit of a wanderer. And getting lucky - mostly I create or make my own 'luck' and sometimes run out of it as well.

Last evening I was detecting near some well to do properties where their front yards and long driveways to their houses are actually council parks with trees and bush. I have certainly come to their attention, but I have ignored the buggers. One guy stood at the window in his dressing gown staring at me. Got the fright of my life, thought he was a ghost! haha! As long as they mutter to themselves into their chardonnays I don't care!
