I was detecting at a park today and came across a number of holes only half backfilled and had to pick up a heap of dug up bottle caps and junk incl a massive padlock that was sitting right beside the half filled hole. im sure the groundsman would have loved to run over that with the mower. if we keep this up we will get banned from detecting.
there ive had my rant but please take what we dig or worst case re bury it. happy hunting

Geez yeah............ruff as guttz. Almost looks like a pile of bubbled-up liquefaction. What the hell was someone thinking to leave it looking like that!
I'd be surprised if it was one of the guys on this forum.
I think from what I've seen, most of us here are pretty clued up on the "MD rules of engagement" and would be aware of the "reaming-out" we would get from our peers if any of us left a dig in this state.

It's not hard to put the soil you dig out on a bit of polythene then pour back into the hole and replace the grass "plug" as for leaving junk why chance finding it again.

whodunnit?

seems odd they didn't take the crap they dug up with them.

back to the part about getting banned, maybe it should be emphasised that digging up public places probably isn't a legitimate activity anyway.

does anyone seek permission from the custodian/management/owners before they dig these places up.

in this case the person wasn't exactly sneaking around either with such obvious handiwork.

That sure is a mess :(

I've been doing stuff nice and close to the river recently, allowing me to carry a 1 litre water bottle around with me so I can soak the ground once I've refilled the hole, and refill the water bottle in the river. It's a bit more work, but I think it's worth it with the ground so dry.

I had a detect at a school yesterday and lost my probe, I spent a good 20 minutes looking for it, the probe is a motorbike spoke with an alloy handle so not difficult to replace but I thought what if some innocent child somehow fell on it and was injured or the probe was thrown and blinded someone, whatever the scenario I would have been partly responsible.

Holes are just as important to me, I always cut a circular plug, leave a flap so it looks pretty much invisible when I'm finished. Hate to think someone tripped or whatever. Better to be safe than sorry.

The unfortunate thing is that the people responsible give the good ones a bad name and I doubt they care. It's not just the parks, I've seen huge holes at the beach and also at fossicking areas in the river banks.

We try to be invisible so how do we get the message out that it's not ok and if we do will it sink in?

It is very rare for me to find others plugs and I would hope that the same can be said for mine, so to the person who dug plugs at the park down the road from the main Mornington park almost a year ago.... Well done plugs were complete circles so the grass died but you could see there was pride and consideration in their work. To the person who recently attempted to dig bomb shelters next to KVC shame on you, you need a swift kick up the rear end! Putting that on here and out to the universe may not do much but that's still better than nothing.

Permission is a funny one, just because you have permission doesn't mean the next person does, even though you have been responsible from the get go doesn't stop the finger being pointed if there is a problem.

Oh man that is a bloody mess. Looks pretty fresh too so you mighta just missed the clown that did it!
Its not hard to leave a neat and tidy hole thats damn near invisible!!
Some MD'ers have a conscience and some dont care so much at all obviously.
There's another to find and I'm gunna find it!
