you and me both mate.

got a 2.5 inch that beens sitting in the shed since i bought it 2nd hand.

there's nowhere to use a dredge, leaving you with 2 choices:

1. you get lucky and someone lets you operate on their claim. this can be risky to the claim holder as anything you do comes back against their licence (i.e. dredging the banks.)

2. dredge somewhere secluded and risk getting caught. chances are low if you have the right secluded spot. get it wrong and your gear and vehicle can be seized.

someone had the cops on them on the arrow recently. they may not have been secluded enough. they were smack bang behind arrowtown in plain view of every NIMBY.

If your looking for somewhere to give your dredge a spin theres nothing wrong with the Lindis at old faithfull reserve, good access, go in at the 9 mile. Its had a hiding over the years but you can still get gold if you persevere ,theres plenty of reef and the cockys a good bugger. Don't get a mouthful of water though, too many freedom campers shitting near the river. Theres also plenty of flower gold in the upper clutha, try any small safe back water below maori point, theres plenty of fishermans access points but too much water through the sluice and its gone.Be careful here, this is powerful water. I'm in wanaka so PM me if you want to go out some time....no mining permits on issued on these spots...
