Get hold of a book called "The Golden Bush" by Temple Sutherland. You will really enjoy it. It covers mining in the area during the depression years. No more said.

There were over 200 families living in the Howard during the depression, what area did you tramp in? There are the remains of lots of old huts in that area which Doc have burnt down over the years. Some of the area has been worked over by bulldozer but there is plenty of tunnels and gold up in those hills.

Great place up there was the first place i found gold in the south island down in the new creek fossicking area. Spent a fair bit of time up there when i was working on the transmission towers few places we found signs of old camp site and such would love to spend a couple of weeks up there prospecting and hunting hope fully this year.
