So I have a creek that I think most people just pass up.

We were on a fishing trip in the area last year and I thought I would go have a look at the place.

Took me about 30min to find what I now think was a piece of pyrite stuck to a by of rock. So just because there is pyrite in the area should I out getting gold?

I would love to post a pic but lost the rock to my tackle box on the return trip. I should mention I found it by hand, cleared out some cracks under a boulder at the bottom of a drop off and picked it up when I saw it.

If you're asking if you should rule out finding gold then no, pyrite is often an accessory mineral in auriferous veins. A bit more info on the location would help though.

Yeah well the Coromandel is known for its epithermal gold as well as the extensive porphry style deposits which include pyrite and a whole suite of other minerals, so definitely have another look.

It never is, never done a week long trip anywhere and had more than 3 days decent weather lol, but yes what you said.

I see the far north might have some dirt to play with as well. I spend more time up there each year than in the coro :)

It is and it isn't. Pyrite precipitates everywhere from gold bearing quartz veins to stagnant drains. Its a good sign, but not an indicator mineral.

So, I went for a look see yesterday.

Did a few sample pans in the creek and got nothing, wasn't expecting anything. I did see someone else in coro town carrying a sluice and shovel out of a car lol. So much for being covert.

I know there's gold in the area, found 3 germ reports on it that all have it as a feature comodity so will keep at it, will spend more time in mid feb.

Also after doing the drive up am even more keen on seeing what a dredge along the coast would show up, but that won't happen.

Do you always get black sands in the coro? I didn't even get any of those, think I might throw a sluice together for the next trip.

Spent teh day fishing on the mandel again, found some massive amazing quartz intrusion looking veins that ran along just above and in some places under the water line. Smashed the hell out of them with my hammer/peace maker once you get the past the crap on top, it was white quartz underneath. Need a decent rock hammer now and a pin pointer.

Will be back there fishing next weekend and having another closer look.
