My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

Stop the press ! Hold the front page ! The secret is out. On the radio they said it came from Beleret ( I know that's not spelt right, but you'll figure it out ! ) in Victoria. Which is as common as finding big nuggets in Thames. The big nuggets usaully come from western Australia.

E-A-F: I think you may have gotten a little confused there.

80 percent of the world's largest nuggets originate from an area near ballarat (Victoria, Australia).

The are is called the "Golden Triangle".

This is just a small area within Victoria's goldfields.

The area encompasses a roughly triangular shape between the settlements of Castlemaine, Avoca, and Wedderburn.

this link details the triangle further:

Hi, I'am not trying to start an argument and I'am probably a bit late repllying . I brought a Aussy mag called Caravan & Motorhome and they had a DVD with each one and they went through Victoria and chatted to people fossicking and they said they worked very hard for very little. But hey they could be trying to put people off from this area. I've got a Aussy mag "Gold Gem & Treasure" and they hint that Western Ausralia is better. So who do you believe ?
On a more possitive note, the people that I have learnt a lot off from Australia and got DVDs of is Doug Stone, Jack Lange , Chris Ghoison and Jack Porter.

Hi there EAF, Chris is from Arizona in the US & I think that the Jack Porter you mention is probably Jonathan Porter although there is a Jack Porter from the US.
As to who to believe, history will tell you that many BIG nuggets have been found in the Victoria goldfields. What you are hearing & reading about today are related to gold being found in present times. But there are always going to be the odd "discovery" of big ones just like that 177 ounce piece.

Hows your fossicking been. You been getting up the Coro?

Good luck out there.

JW :)

E.A.F.

sorry wasn't trying to argue. just saying that 'historically' it was in the golden triangle that the big stuff was found. obviously this is one that got away then and has now been found. there could still be more, who knows. personally i'd say there is more. it just depends how deep and what minute chances there are of someone finding them, as there is a lot of hot, fly filled country to detect.

as for stuff all being found i would consider that to be a bit short. its not the goldrush of the past but all those toughened aussies still hard at it, some are finding good patches just like here. you just have to put in the hard yards and a shit load of time.

sure everyone's headed out west but that doesn't mean there aren't some doing well back in NSW, VIC, and QLD.

there's heaps of aussies tourists here. whenever i talk gold they usually have a thing or 2 to say. for example a guy the other day put me right when i said everyone says theres not much gold up QLD for the little guy to prospect. well, he reckoned that was b.s. said they fly regularly upriver in copters to catch the gold poachers.

and several people that actually detect have said NSW has many forgotten and overlooked fields that do ok if you put in some time, as everyone head over west or to VIC.

i still stick to the story of most gold is still out there. we've just found the easy stuff.
