If they manage to get them all, they won't be worth as much as currently - supply & demand. 140 new spitfires suddenly becoming available will dramatically drop their current worth of around a million in working order. Still I would love to be part of the dig! Lets hope they make non-Americanised documentary so we can see how it goes.

I think I heard an update that when they went looking the Spitfires were not there - a pity methinks as it is nice to see people have dreams of finding something like that then go and discover them.

I was waiting to find out what condition they were in and so on. I also thought that more people would have responded on your thread as it is an interesting one and one for which I am grateful to you for pointing out as I was going to follow the news items about them with interest except it all fizzled out...or seems to have done.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

When you hear news such as the first announcement you want to believe in it for the sake of the fellows who have their dreams resting on it - but seeing is indeed believing and so nothing exists until it has been located and then retrieved in which case the dream has become reality but most dreams are just that...dreams which come to nothing.

I was pretty sceptical about it because if that number existed then memories would have been pretty definitive and so close to centres of population that locals would have been able to state quite categorically that 'X' marks the spot!

I do hope that they still find something though - for their sakes and as a reward for their faith and their courage putting their words into action and looking.

Sad that a dream didnt become a reality but to my way of thinking the odds were stacked against them from the word go and even if they had existed it would be interesting to know just how well they were preserved in waterlogged ground.

I dont know why they didnt search for known crashed aircraft as the jungle is full of them over there and negotiate the retrieval of some of them. The Polykarpovs which Tim Wallace had restored were shattered mangled wrecks when they were found and even the wrecks in Burma would have been better bets I think.

I dont think I would have liked to have been one of the search team as the odds would not have been in my favour - 23 guys to 2 females - not good odds at all!
