Here's a useful link for the present for anyone wanting to see how mental the rivers are going around here in the Wakatipu. i see the dart has already gone over 1000 at the really bad weather is still coming apparently. A good time to stay home.

Wow, that was some intense thunder and rainfall yesterday. woke to another stunner so off to check out the shot over river. got up over 500 cumecs. strangely the upper river is still rising but lower is falling. this is because most water fell in the moonlight catchment. boy that waterway can rise rapidly and rage.

the dart river got to about 1500 cumecs (but now already only half that) but is still loading up the lake.

looks like we'll have to sit it out and see what the following days and days of rainfall predicted bring to us.

a shame the arrow doesn't have waterflow and rainfall monitoring systems on it. sure won't be easy getting up that way for a bit. or anywhere near water basically. might turn out to be a detecting summer.

Thanks for the info Simon, I was down visting my Brother over the holiday break. I left last Thursday and the Shotover was bank to bank at the bridge.

The good thing is all the sediments and gravels will get stirred up and will likely shift, redistribute and expose some gold. Just have to be patient and wait for the river levels to return to normal then go find that new gold.

All the best for the New year, Ken.

the shotover after it had already dropped a fair bit .

going back up the 12 mile tomorrow. checked it out today and never seen it so massive and raging. going to take a hd camera up there and my stills. lets hope the track is intact.

and here's a couple of 2 mile pics from Friday. it had already come down heaps but still raging enough to keep all and sundry out.

went up the 12 mile again yesterday all the way to the hut. got their and ran into my neighbours of all people!

creek was down a load since the day before but still raging and dirty. many floods it doesn't even discolour.

unfortunately some massive trunks have made it into the bed and wedged on rocks. the ones i could see are all chainsawed so probably a byproduct of the track widening project. so expect these to chock the whole channel full of overburden. not good for getting to bedrock.

did some detecting. tried a bit where a big tree peeled the soil off the jagged bedrock and got a good signal. another bloody nail. always surprising where they appear! the signal that you think has to be gold is always that. the ones i expect to be noting are always gold! lesson again, dig the lot and you will see.

will try and post some pics later.sunny for once so heading out to make the most of it. days of rain still heading this way.

good to see some photos on the forum keith. cheers. looks like your river has been misbehaving. hope it hasn't messed up your work.

the weather sure has been playing havoc lately. had a nice little 4am thunderstorm last night. will see what we get later today. lake is lapping its edges here. who would have thought to stick a town in a flood zone.
