Hi. I am in this area in a few days. Was wondering if anyone had a claim I could have a tickle at for about 2 hours with nothing but shovel and pan. With the wife, so time very limited and just want to try and show her some colour to get her hooked!
Any help, offer etc would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of the claim owners are probably busy trying to pay for Xmas and more permit fees!

You could try the DOC website. it shows public areas where you can go and legally pan or sluice box. you can even park up and camp at some ofthe locations.

there can be good gold is these areas too. they might just be a bit more accessible than someone's claim that may be the back of yonder and a battle just to access it.

just remember you sandfly spray. some say these buggers are the protector of gold. you'll see why when you get out there.

Good scratching at the Lyell. Sandflies have double rows of teeth though. There is an extra plus side, the track has been upgraded great for a walk or a mountainbike

Thank you everyone. I will wear a shark proof suit underneath my 13Tth Century Body Armour! May give the Lyall a go then and a fiddle at Slab Hut. Like to try Howard but don't think I will get my Honda up that 4WD Track.

Tane

You can coastal river levels at
http://www.wcrc.govt.nz/...r_level_rainfall/7_days/
or a table at
http://www.wcrc.govt.nz/...ainfall/data_summary.htm

mostly major rivers but you can see the trend - ie dropping or rising
thanks for PM - will be in touch

Hi

Was up slab hut last thurs Friday, river was still low or normal flow, water still ran through the a52 sluice, just gotta put your hands in the water she's a little bit nippy! Quite nice, not a person about, bugger all sandflies, think they might have eaten the gold and died. River bank was still frozen, and yet I loved every minute of being there, good luck if you get a chance to go.

Thanks mate. Hope it stays that way for the next week or so. Thinking of doing a day trip to slab hut in a week or so. My wife spotted that kick arse pizza oven on the side of the creek, last time we past through. gunna prep some pizzas, go for a mean drive through the mountains, sluice for a few hours with the kids, have a hot pizza on the side of the creek and slow cruise back home!! good day out.

you get much colour when you where there?

Can sure as hell think of a lot worse ways to spend a day, even the West Coast air smells better, it's a bloody nice spot and good for the kids to have a play about. I probably found enough colour to pay for my fuel to get out the driveway!!! Had an absolute shocker but hey that's the way gold goes, I don't do it to get rich or I would be in debt beyond my eyeballs. Good luck, Cheers, Nick
