Hi all,

given the nasty types given uncontrolled rein to their troll behaviour on this forum its about time this forum draws a line in the sand and say there are rules, and if you don't abide by them you will be banned.

here are some edited examples of rules from two forums:

“...While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate rudeness, insulting posts, swearing including abbreviated swear words, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts..... Please respect the original poster`s topic and stay on topic with any replies. We reserve the right to remove offensive posts without notice. We also reserve the right to ban anyone who wilfully violates the forum rules. Also, while these rules cover most common situations, they cannot anticipate everything and consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way....”

“....You warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, or threatening...We reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason....”

I will brace myself for the troll responses.

Why not simply use the "Report" button to bring it to the attention of myself or oroplata (now a moderator)?

I've been pretty busy lately but try to check to see if any posts have been reported regularly. Nothing reported recently. Please be aware that I don't get the time to read all posts that get posted to these forums (I wish I had more time to do so) so you need to let me know if there's any abuse going on.

dredgey's account has now been suspended from using the forums for a week due to his inflammatory posts and PM's! Everyone deserves a 2nd chance so not barred him permanently.

swearing, people getting banned, reporting on people....

this site's getting a bit too pc. no wonder posts are dropping off. what is stopping banned people from simply re registering under a new name?!

or the banned simply becoming another watcher as opposed to a participator. i'd rather see some trouble than no participation at all.

as in life i choose to ignore such banter. why on earth can people not do the same in this unreal internet world?!

yep we'll probably just have to copy paste all of our posts from now on.
guess all we will see a is posts about some coins amybe the odd nugget and then a heap of replies all saying "wow great find" for fear of upsetting anyone.
god forbid anyone who starts a debate might only be 2 or 3 dogooder members left to post anything.

Seems the junk finds topic stirred up a few on both sides and some of the main contributers to the junky stuff have their own blogs was woundering why you need to post them here also? as i guess most of the people that like that sorta stuff probably follow your blogs and can veiw it there instead

dredgey is the first person I've ever suspended (and it's only for a week!). I usually let things slide if possible, as I've mentioned before I like to be very hands-off. But looking over dredgey's last posts he seemed to be intentionally stirring trouble. He's also seemed to be heavily involved in the last thread that got out of hand. I don't mind a little light hearted digging at each other and I'll only delete things if causing real offence and things are descending in to a slagging match. He also seemed to be sanding quite offence PM's too.

Good one Gavin. Its not about being pc Simon. I have been thinking about the website for while now, and I have for over a year enjoyed reading all the gold and other treasures posts. And I have met quite a few members in person. For me I was thinking about the people who could be reading this site, maybe families, kids (my teenages read the posts) , people thinking about joining, spouses of members, overseas treasure hunters. For me its about what you would post that you would be proud to show your kids, your wife. And this site whether we like it or not is a kind of advertisement for NZ and our way of life, and our of sense of adventure and love of outdoors and our openness and our friendly nature. Why should there be any tolerance for inflamatory nonsense that a few people have been posting. As soon as anyone mentions the phrase "its all getting a bit pc" is that just another way of saying "one should be able to slang off at others, belittle their hobby and wind them up with insults and they should "man up" and handle it", (not that you do any of these things Simon.) Having high standards, in my opinion, will only improve this site and encourage members, but it will give current members full confidence to post their experiences without wondering if a troll is going to mock, insult, ridicule them. Cheer Tony.

Yep, I agree with tonznz and Gavin and a couple others. This forum is great, but trolls, twats or idiots being obnoxious should not be tolerated. If you don't like something by all means say so, but do it in an socially acceptable way. Or just go read another post.
As long as the rules don't get too finicky so that I can't say "hey, that's a shitload of gold mate" - which I think is fine - but to say "hey that gold is a load of shit mate" is offensive and should be discouraged. There is a line that should not be crossed, juvenile behaviour like name calling and threats are well past what is acceptable to most people.
Post as many rusty keys as you like, as far as I'm concerned, I won't be interested, but that's ok, there are a heap of posts I do enjoy.
Keep up the good work organisers it is appreciated. Nuggy

My 2 cents: when the interwebs came along in the 90’s I found that there were forums (like this one) about outdoors activities I was interested in. It was quite a revelation in that you could post back and forth opinions about gear, places to go etc. Not only were these forums fun, they were very educational. People would share a lifetimes experience and you could sift through it and pick up a great deal of good information. They all seemed to last a year or two and would then deteriorate into a miserable pissfest and suddenly everyone would be gone. It seems most people have no interest in anonymous fights over nothing. I just checked and some of the forums I used to participate in are still operational. Only now instead of hundreds of posts a day they look to be getting a couple a month. It seems that once a forum goes down the path of anything goes they never recover, even well over ten years later. So for this reason I strongly support any many rules and as strict enforcement as is necessary to keep this forum civil because I like it and don’t want to see it die. If someone believes everyone else should have a thick skin and that they should be free to express themselves any way you see fit, that’s great, but there are plenty of other places for that so there is no need for it here.
