hi all, new to this gold thing and bought a minelab eureka gold and headed for central otago, dug up all sorts of targets except gold , as there were plenty of holes around and old workings i presume i had the location right, I dug small lead bullet fragments at about 4 inches, was wondering if any members use this detector and how they rate it to similar priced machines ..cheers webby1

Hi
A mate of my,n has 1 iv seen him pull out the tinyist bits of gold with it he mostly detects on bedrock that has been hammerd by detectorists over the years and still finds it.
He reckons its better than the gold bugs..

dont know about your detector but iv got a goldbug and was just getting junk and shot like you and wondering if i was using it right. i keeped at it and started finding small bit. i think its more about where your looking then what detector your using. if the golds not to deep you cant help but hear it. keep at it and you will find some.

Hi Webby1, I've got one too and so far have found only coins and lots of metal of all sorts, I'm still finding it quite hard to get the discrimination sorted out but am pretty confidant that I could recognize a nugget if I found one because I bought a small one measuring 0.655 of a gram for practicing on - my machine can find it with no trouble at all at 4 inches deep so I'm hoping it's only a matter of time before I find my own one.
Cheers,
John

Right now, there are 3 possible things happening.

1. There is no gold where you are hunting.

2. There is gold there, but not at sizes/depths the Eureka Gold can detect.

3. There is gold there that a Eureka Gold can detect but you don't have the right settings/methods.

What you might consider doing is buying or borrowing a small nugget (say half a gram) and putting it in a zip bag and burying it in one of the areas you detect in, and keep playing around with the detector until it picks up the gold.

That will item 3 from the list above, which will vastly increase your chances of finding some gold.

Once you have the detector settings right, get a mate to put the gold in one of a number of holes (so you don't know which one it's in) and practice locating it. Spending a day doing that will save you months of running around with a detector you are unsure of.
