just spotted this letter in the paper.

can anyone add to this?

the guy reckons the road is going to be built to access the asbestos deposits.

perhaps the secret source of funding the westland council spoke of the other day is a mining company?

Interesting article - there is a 'mine' of mineral wealth there and I have been surprised that intense interest has not been shown in the area previously.

As for my personal feelings about the road and any ulterior motives involved in its contruction the road might be OK but the possible ulterior motives arent!

As for the mineral wealth - it should be owned lock, stock and barrel by the State and NO offshore interests should be allowed to take so much as a pebble...the people of this land are being robbed, in my opinion of their birthright.

A great thing about Fiordland is that it takes an effort to get in there and you are rewarded with your work by seeing an unmodified landscape, the road or whatever will destroy that uniqueness and open it up for destruction.
Milford sound has changed so much since the time me and my dad used to pick the fish up from the boats, I went on a boat cruise there a couple of years back and then was concerned about the amount of charter companies and the constant turnover of people made me feel this environment can take no more!
Our country is in the grips of oil barons/CIA affiliated corporates and corrupt council and govt members, this is a plan that begun many years ago and NZ has been deceived for a long time about the agenda, It is now coming into effect, soon they will be drilling in water deeper than the gulf of Mexico off Stewart Island. Word is at the pub on the island they are quite happy with the oil(as they have a beer with the PR people and the island police drive around in their two new patrol cars...)! I recommend the book 'NewZealands Lost Oil Fields', very enlightening...for sale at the Stewart Island pub...
