Hi guys, Went for a wonder thru some old workings the other day after work (my birthday) that I hadnt done too well on with the GP 3000. I did find a few tiddlers with the 3000 a couple of years ago but with changing coils & going over it a few more times I got nothing more. Often when putting on a slightly larger coil it gives a bit more depth & gets deeper gold. I hadnt been back to this spot since.
With my "new" GPX 4500 I was walking past this spot to try further in when I thought I may as well give the 45 a go in there to see what it may pick up that the 3000 missed. This would be a bit of proof to me that this later model was indeed an improvement on the 3000 & put my mind at ease to the expense of the upgrade. (cashed in some gold to get it) I had for a few years now been contemplating this move but still doing well with the 3000 & knowing it so well & many people saying to me that because our ground is so quiet that the upgrade & expense may not be warrented.

Well bugger me.....I got 10 little blighters in a very short distance. That was with the 11" minelab commander mono coil & not the little 10 x 5 joey mono which is usually so hot in these conditions with the 3000.

Smallest .10 of a gram Biggest .57 of a gram. Total 2.5 grams. Opens up all my old ground again. Although a couple of my hot spots with the 3000 has produced no more with the 4500. These were the first spots I headed to when I got the 4500 & in getting nothing I was getting concerned that maybe I had made a mistake.

A day earlier I got this 2 gram piece amongst a lot of rubbish. It was weird as I was sure it was just a .22 bullet head. It was such a loud signal but it did appear to have come out from within the schist once I had scrapped away the soil & top litter. Suddenly the signal was gone from the schist & somewhere in the grass. It was getting hard to get the bugger in my hand that made me so sure it was lead. But in the back of my tiny mind was the fact it came out from within the schist & not on top of it. I persevered & BINGO

The 45 is a bit of a different beast to the 3000 but I am now getting my head around it.

Good luck out there

JW :)

hi john,

good to see your new detectors are paying their way!

i have visited some spots in varying conditions with the same detector and often find more stuff.

a lot of it seems to be that even the low and slow misses stuff if you don't come in at differing angles to the patch of ground. a bit like when you find a target then try and see what it is like from different angles.

i reckon if you went where theres heaps of metal that in amongst it there is still some gold as most don't like to mess with the rubbished sites as they get a few ferrous targets and give up.

in terms of gold in schist - stuff can sure work its way in. i have had targets in schist and found metal fragments. just as the gold did the miners crap has found the same cracks!

keep it up.

simon.
