I see a few members here are driven to detect because they want to find silver/gold regularly (don't we all) - however was it really the chase for money that got you into the hobby?

I got into detecting about a year ago for health reasons - bad ticker & going blind
I couldn't find a better hobby that takes me to some of the best scenery in NZ (parks, reserves, beaches, lakes etc) which no doubt will give me fantastic memories of what I have seen while for-fulling a desire

I also love the fact that I am pulling plenty of rubbish from these places as well as finding the odd relic & coin to boot - In fact when I do discover a silver coin on the rare occasions, it really does make my day, however any day detecting to me is an awesome day

What I did not envisage in this hobby was the fact that I really love using the different types of metal detectors available & to meet (online) many people who are as addicted to this as I am

I see some of the locals here are not happy with pulling a couple of silver coins a week - I am sure there would be heaps of yanks over the moon if they could pull that many regularly -

To me personally, I am addicted to this hobby & I get excited about retrieving any target from the ground, good, bad or otherwise - sure jewelery, coins & the likes are the dux nuts to find but IMO if that's your driving force then perhaps you are doing it for the wrong reasons

Sycotoad..im not sure what to make of your post here...I know of one or two ppl that were insulted by your coments that they arnt happy with just a few silvers a week..I for one dont think that is true....yes there are those that prefer to dig silvers but they are collecting coins and that is what they do it for. but they are also happy to pull out a token or an old brit penny. ..all of the people i hav met just enjoy getting out for the thrill of the hunt...
Some prefer to find tokens and some prefer to find the unusal stuff like the old lead toys and what not.....but be it a 1 cent or 2 cent or a half crown...it is getting the signal and wondering what is going to pop out of the ground that keep most of us going out as offten as posible..

I for one just love being in the out doors and if i can be swinging a coil at the same time all the better...I am still yet to find my first real gold ring but i know i will one day..

I dont beleave any of us are doing it for the wrong reasons...we all enjoy it or wouldnt do it as far as i am concerned..

It's just some have a preferance as to what they would like to find..but they are still happy with what ever they get...also most of us take the junk out with us...

And i mean Most of us..lol... i know there is one or two that still leave stuff like parts of tin cans and what not in holes thinking no one will notice...but it does get noticed...

I get tired of pulling 1 and 2 cent coins from the ground but i still dig them on the chance it is something different and the fact that it is a coin is still better than a pull tab..lol.

So to sum up i dont think they are DRIVEN to detect because they want to find silver and gold regularly..i think they do it because they enjoy the hunt...There main targets may be different from yours or mine but it is still the hunt......Atleast with all the ones i have been out with it is the hunt.

Cheers
Chris

for once Pooh I have to tend to agree with the Jafa and that's like swallowing a cup of sick...not that you're a twat or that you deserve steel shot but I think you've made a call there that's off the mark. Dude I seen no way of insult or any wrong doing in what this chap wrote, and if anyone was insulted by that then maybe they need to stop wear the wifes skirt? Chill baby chill..... We're all here to learn, view stuff found and make new hunting buddies after all...

The reason I hunt. To fill my treasure chest with booty hahaa it aint working out that way tho it's full of pennies and 1 & bloody 2 cent coins haha. And I enjoy the hunt...immensly...which includes researching places via books, libraries, internet and learning my local and further afield histroy (something I had no inclination to do at school let alone even want to be there) and to find that one thing that will either change people's thoughts on NZ history or make me filthy dirty rich haha. I don't and never will expect to do that of course but one must dream. Till then I simply enjoy being out on my own or with a mate, head down in my own wee zone fuck the rest of the world and it's wars and bull crap and just suck in the fresh air. We all love the hunt, I mean how many of us have said fuck it I'm knackered I will just dig one more hole to see what it is and ended up digging 30 more and being bloody late lol...it's an addictive wee hobby and I love it!

Speaking of research I've been working on a wee project that I'm hoping can get a heap of us to meet up and search a certain place...doub't ther'l be coins or silvers but there MAY be old interesting WAR type relics and I don't mean ww1 or ww2...and that shit gives me a stiffy like gold! Will keep ya's informed as I learn more

Woot. I heard rumours the Ruskis used us as a back-up location in case JFK took out their missiles in Cuba.

I'd love to own a missile silo!

Dan i understand what you are saying...and i didnt say I was insulted..lol...just that i know of 1 or 2 that were as the way they read it..

I can only speak for myself and most that i know..yourself included that we are doing it for the thrill of the hunt and the researching of old places..
finding silvers or gold is a great bonus but it isnt what drives us..

As for Jafa's comment i take them with a grain of salt.....I never once said i was insulted and only said that the ppl i hunt with arnt just in it for the silvers or gold on a regular basses...yet he flings insults at me and wants to pour lead shot all over...hahahaha

as a mater of fact i agree with most of what sycotoad says except for being in it for the wrong reasons..lol...

I remember one time when I was about 8 years old my brother and sisters and I were in a park in Vancouver running around picking up stuff out of the parking lot and rummaging around the bushes finding all sorts of junk and playing with it and my aunt says “My God you kids are a bunch of little scavengers!” I guess we were, but I always remembered her saying that with disgust like we were a pack of rats.

It didn’t have a permanent effect because I seemed to have spent a lifetime hunting for things. Deer, agates, ducks, arrowheads, squirrels, shellfish, gold, berries, coins, fish, rocks to climb, whatever; if I am outside I find myself looking for something. I chalk it up to humans being hunter gatherers for such a long time, I think it is just in our genes.

A lot of people turn their nose up at hunting animals, but everybody hunts; some people get a thrill out of buying something on sale, or finding the perfect pair of shoes to go with an outfit, or an old tractor in the back of a barn, or saving 30 cents because they saved a coupon. Oh, and then there are garage sales, trade me, and junk shops, people hunt the hell out of those. It is really no different than hunting pigs in the bush; but we all find a way to fill that need to hunt and gather. To me metal detecting is just pure no bullshit hunting. There are treasures out there and you are looking for them; simple and satisfying.
