ive found a signal that is bit out of reach is it worth goin back. heres the facts.west coast a side cut of a hill, the face is around 15-20 meters high."ancient river gravels/rocks" the face is constanly eroding ,even while standing there you can see rocks coming down.got a signal while stretched out full with metal detecor above me.the area around the signal had that rusty look to it that you see on the coast in some of the gravels. the signal would be 10-15 meters below ground if the hill side hadnt been cut.looked like there was a bit of quartz in the area around the signal

is it worth going back with appropriate gear to try and get it,ladder and so on

what are your thoughts?

cheers from chch

Be careful - don't want to get caught under a land slip digging away at the side of the cut! Give me the co-ordinates and I'll do it for you instead ;)

what is the rusty colour you see in some areas? is it assosiated with gold at all ? would one expect to find nuggets in those old river walls of big round rocks or does it tend to be fine gold. has anyone else found a nugget in a face as described?

guess i beter head back this coming weekend and maby tow the missus along to be my eyes and ears

will keep you posted on what i find. and hopefully get a fish or two on the way over :)

chchfossiker,

luke has it. try and use a long pole of some sort. knock the spot out. if the whole bank stands get in closer and detect the fallen bit.

that is if the bank is really soft enough to knock to bits that easily. even those eroding banks are a lot stronger than they look.

the rusty stuff is the oxidising iron sands. as the bank erodes the exposed seams of iron sands hit the air and oxidise and create that rusty look.

this will prob have been laid by a river when the sea was higher. i personally have had zero luck with such banks. they always look good but the reality is just because the streaks of rust exist there may well be no gold. that said, even if there is no nuggets it would be worthy of a pan to check for any signs of gold eg. dust or flake. if good i'd hit some more bank.

as we all know damaging road cuttings can get you in hot water. if it's the main highway it may need a bit of night attention.

i will put my money on a signal as good as a nugget being a big maori. that is, a big chunk of magnetite. called 'maoris' in the rush prob due to the inventiveness in the names department by the europeans at the time.

i would love to see you prove me wrong!

just don't get maimed doing so.

i've thought of attacking many cliffs with helmet protection. just fooling yourself with a helmet. the sharp slabs of rock will still crush you so a helmet is only really good for small stones bouncing off the face. AND they still hurt if they miss your helmet.

At the end of the day - if it seems risky prob worth a miss. I've found a few good signals that I was convinced must be a nugget due to the location, but was disappointed to find a mangled lead slug.

Have you found any gold in the area? If so, might be worth prodding with a stick etc. from a safe distance / hurling rocks up at the spot if loose to try and dislodge material (but could loose nugget).

What did your detector tell you about the signal?
No point in standing under an unstable bank for a lump of coagulated iron sand.
Just a thought.

Yes, go back with a discriminating detector to confirm it rings in as in the gold range, then attack it with a long pointed stick from a safe range. Make Eric Idle proud.
