Been having an explore over Danseys Pass last few days. Lots of old gold mining activity in the area in the past.

Spotted a fossicker digging himself a deep hole here in the river - http://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap?v=2&ll=-44.948719,170.563125&z=14&pin=1&lbl=Fossicker - was hoping I'd bump in to him the next day but no luck. Was curious how he got on.

Lots of exposed bedrock in the river - had a few hours with the detector but just found a lead bullet and small bits of rusty metal wedged in the gaps. But my machine is more of a coin beasty - must upgrade! Had a little play with the gold pan to make sure there was gold in the area - quickly found flood gold in every pan.

Some awesome camping spots next to the river and lots of drift wood for the camp fire. Really enjoyed camping out down here.

Choice Gav! Good to see you're finding some of the yellow. Looks like a nice quiet remote spot to do some camping and fossicking.

There was a little traffic coming and going, but fairly quiet road. Should be easy to find a spot not so visible from the road though if you walk upstream a bit ;)

The further up over the pass you go the quieter it seems too - being a gravel road most of the way probably puts most traffic off. Nicer camping spots seemed to be over the eastern part around the spot I marked on the map.

So are you in the country yet?

Cheers for th info. I reckon a 4WD camper is the way to go... got my eyes on a troupie and hope it don't sell before I get into NZ, which is only 3 weeks away now. Will spend a few weeks first catching up with family in Tauranga, Hamilton, Coromandel [where I'll begin fossicking].... but want to get down South pronto before the cold weather starts setting in..... the fever is strong. lol ...Will be good to meet up for an excursion sometime in Feb/ March.

I looked at that area on the map, and remember always looking inland towards the mountains when driving through to Dunners [where I spent my varsity years]. Very nice country.

Must say - I'm chuffed with the sleeping platform I made for my 4wd truck. The lady seems to like it too which I was quite surprised about so she's been joining me on my camping adventures. Can't beat getting away from the crowds, camping in some scenic spot next to a river and getting a camp fire going - the simple pleasures!

Would love to hook up when you're over here and have a play some spot - give me a shout nearer the time and we'll come up with a plan :) Want to try and get away as many weekends as I can while it's warmer!

Ive seen the old guy with his rubber gloves, his pan was so rusty and dented, it looked like it had done a lot of work :) I have done alot of panning, sluecing and alot of detecting with my minelab threw the danseys pass around the camping ground and up both forks of the river up futher, found no nuggets as of yet and small amounts of colour from panning and sleucing will keep you posted on what rewards it brings :)
