Just noticed a GPX 5000 advertised on Trade Me - but it's actually an upgraded GPX4000 !!

To me this is a misleading add - you can put a new motherboard in an older machine but that does not make it new - it makes it an old machine with a new motherboard!
If I put a Subaru engine in a Lada that does not make it a Subaru.
The guy who upgraded this machine has a questionable reputation - this he may or may not deserve, but this is a fact that should be known to anyone punting that sort of money on a detector ($7,000).
It's a large jump up from the $3,300 one GPX4000 was offered for on here recently.
Caveat Emptor I guess.

If you are confused or worried, fire ahead with some questions to them - it appears that they respond well when asked ..................

IMO it looks like a modified GPX4000 to me

"If I put a Subaru engine in a Lada that does not make it a Subaru"

your right, it makes it a wheelie bin

must be wet in the country. everyone seems to have too much time to be online and not mining.

i don't know this fella selling the minelab and don't want to take part in another pull apart if this is where it is headed but i have one thing to say concerning a comment i saw made by JW under this guys trade me listing.

JW stated mine lab won't even touch a modded detector let alone repair or maintain it.

why?

i have heard of such modding done and the guys seem happy with it. it isn't cheap and the detector has to be sent off so its out of action for a while.

unless such people are stupid they seem to believe the modding has helped.

so why is minelab against this.?

i can think of a couple of possibilities:

1. the lamest would be the usual you have opened the case and only are goons are intelligent enough to be able to fix such an item...

2. the modding actually has a result and they aren't happy.

2b. if modding is good or not why doesn't minelab offer this and make more money.

Yeah - wasn't meant to be a pull apart, and no not confused or worried - well not about this anyway. Just my comments and opinion on an auction that I thought some members might be interested in. I for one don't like to see adverts that are misleading anyway, but I would not comment on an auction itself. Good on the seller though for now clarifying things.

The whole modding thing is interesting me as well - I don't as yet own a Minelab PI machine, but am considering getting one at some stage. The mods are controversial and different people offer different ones, some of them seem very minor mods, while others like "Woodie" offer what seems like major surgery with transplants - they all have backers and Woodie certainly has some knockers.
I have very little knowledge of electronics - certainly not enough to know what the hell the mods actually are when I read the details.
Minelab certainly are against modding, probably for many reasons, as above, but it is not unusual for manufacturers of anything to void warranties if the item has been worked on by unauthorised service people. I am not worried unduly by this as whoever modded the machine should be able to repair it if a fault develops. Minelab don't have a good reputation for after-sale service anyway - according to reports on other forums.
