Hi folks,

I've just returned from my first prospecting trip down South. We'll it wasnt a prospecting trip, more a holiday with a few hours of panning here and there.

I managed to get a few hours in at each of these locations, Orepuki, Ross and Wakamarina.

Without a doubt the pans with the most colour in them came from Orepuki. The only problem is the tiny size of the gold there. It is found in black sand and had I had a sluice box on me running some good quantities of material through I felt it would have been quite productive.

Has anyone else here prospected Orepuki?

Hey Pete, it is mate. About an hour out of Invercargill...

http://maps.google.co.nz...um=1&ved=0CBoQ8gEwAA

The Mrs's input...

"Out of Invercargill state highway 6, turn off towards riverton, go through riverton, past colac bay and its the next beach after that."

Yeah mate, went out there often when I was livin in Invers....the gold there is pretty much of an indicator of the gold that can be found thru-out southland.
Its reliant on the surf to bring it up, many trips out there i came home with nothing...
The beach at lake waituna is the same...

If you think thats fine gold, the gold at Oreti beach is like talcum powder, any wind on your pan when its dry and its gone....700 or 800 tons of sand might get you an ounce of gold lol

yea iv hada play at orepuki iv been told the trick is to get there at low tide dig down to find the rite layer of black sand and start filling bags or buckets and eather take it home ona trailer or do it by a creek at the beach through a very long sluice but its painfully slow scoop after scoop of near pure...black sand....ew!

yes its pretty minimal on the beach, ive run a sluice a few times and yes you get colour but the effort to seperate it is massive.A strong magenet would help.
Alot of gold was taken in and around orepuki and there is an active claim being worked now.

The gold IS fine as. We met a local farmer who does it as a hobby. He said it takes about 50,000 pieces per oz.

Having panned my concentrate, I think he is right. It was easy to float off it was that fine.

Anyone got any platinum there? I thought I saw some fine flecks, but I have forgotten how you test for it.

I have done a bit of work on the south coast and the Platinum is roughly 1/3 the quantity of the gold. I was camped at Omaui (family from there) and had all my gear stolen, exceptionally pissed off, but the gold was exceptionally good much the same as Orepuki, with a very high flatness index. If anyone is keen on recovering to a sufficent grade use a set of jigs. I could talk for hours on it but the coast is exceptionally good if you know how to do it, the beaches on the west coast are even better at times as well.

Haha yea his falt is pretty scarfie from what ive heard do you spend most of your time chasing beach gold or do u go looking for nuggety stuff too. I recently got a detector and am enjoying using that insted of using a sluice box.

haha jimi stewart,i worked at bullabulling WA,last year with him, good bloke allright, union riG jimi
out of 1 ton of black sand,5grams i got, running sluice back home in backyard, yea very fine
50/50 platnm i reakn,
blue bowl iv used.bugger that way to much time.
arrowriver i hear a nugget calling me im flying back in two days.
what im not shaw on is the whole setting up a sluice right there on the beach,
as alot of guys do,
tha last time i was there,it been all damd up with a hell of a lot of rocks and trees, blocking the water flow.
so know it is very slow, like an inch of water flow is not great.
could this be tha locals or council gov,i think it should be one of the prospecting spots for everyone.to have a pan, well that about all you can dam do right know, bugger tha specs thell allways be there go for the nuggz.
