Hi guys, Time to get away from all this bitch slapping regarding a .100 gram trademe auction & get back to what this forum is about. GOLD & the finding & adventures of doing so.
I went out on tuesday amongst some old timer workings to a slope I had detected a couple of years ago when I got nothing. I was trying out a new gold detector that is taking a bit of getting my head around but I managed 9 bits for 3.5 grams. I used an external speaker all day.....I havnt been a fan of these as I prefer heads phones. Head phones put you in to a world of your own with no outside noise influences to distract your focus & concentration. Allows you to hear any slight change to the threshold. But this day I stuck with the external speaker to give it an honest go. MMMMM there might be something in them after all with the result I got. I was using a Nuggetfinder 12 X 7 mono. Even working close to powerlines I was able to tune out there influence.

Biggest bit was 1 gram, smallest .13

Good luck out there

JW :)

Good going JW, they are quite chunky too, well done.
I will be getting a day out detecting soon. If my time off and the weather coincide - unlikely the way it's been, but hey you've got to be an optimist to be in this game!
Cheers NUGGY

G'day Nuggy, A guy I am working with goes off to his whitebait stand up Ross way every season. This season no different. But he has come back with not much more than a wet arse. Almost lost his 4X4 in the river crossing getting back out. Just flood after flood after flood. Bugger all bait & had to come back to some paying work as the bait werent doing it for him. He is planning on going back for the last two weeks of the season. Reports are still flood after flood.

Good luck out there mate with your detecting.

Regards

John :)

Believe it or not....next week I am flying up to Auckland....drivig down to Hamilton.....to get a GPX 4500. I am starting a collection LOL :)

Giday John, yes our weather on the coast has been disgustingly bad, worst I remember for many years. Four days fine weather coming though :-)
I too was wondering which detector you had bought? I guess that makes 3, wow - you will have quite a few of the big Minelabs now.
You probably know about this guy, but if you think he's good you could send one of your Minelabs over to Melbourne be modded, not cheap, though he certainly has some big names backing him.

Let me know what you think - good luck NUGGY

Hi there Nuggy, Yes I am very aware of the 'woodypoopoo" & his modding. There is also a guy Ismarel, or some name like that who appears to have more credibility than Woody out there in the detecting world. I have heard & seen a lot of negative feedback towards Woody. I keep a very open mind & to have a person like Jack Lange indorse Woody holds a lot of clout with me & no doubt many others out there. I have been invloved with Jack in my very early gold years on his old forum which hasnt been around now for a long time. I also delt with Jack when I got in to detecting & bought stuff through him & spoke to him on the phone a number of times about detecting. I have a few of his detecting tip videos which are very good. Only wish they were in DVD format...of which you can get today.

The only thing with a modded detector is that Minelab will not touch or be involved with any that have been modded. They wont even service them let alone look at it if something should go wrong with it. But I have also seen a lot of good feedback too about the mods.
Personaly I dont ever think I would go down the modded path. For an older model SD series it could be well worth it as they dont cost much these days if you can get your hands on one. There are guys out there that still swear that the older SD 2000 & 2100 go deeper on the bigger gold. Cheers mate.

WoodyPooPoo - lol - yes I had heard that he has some knockers out there, don't know any details about why as I'm pretty much stuck on VLF machines, I don't do enough detecting these days to warrant getting a PI one. I'm pretty happy with the Gold Bug Pro, even though I probably don't need one, I sort of feel naked if I don't have any detector at all.
Good luck with the purchases and detecting - NUGGY :-)

Yep - I read it, but I'm still not much wiser. The guys dissing Woody were not people who had mods done by him, those who had seem to be happy with their results?
These guys obviously know there Minelabs and the talk about the controls mostly went over my head.
Think if I go back to Aussie again for another detecting trip, I would try to get a hire one (a 5000) for a couple of weeks, but I'd study up the videos first.
I saw an on line Jack Lange video and read an article in Gold Gem and Treasure (my daughter sends me a few copies a year). Think it was a GP Extreme - he did very well with it but he is such a talented detectorist he would probably have beat the others using almost anything.
Good luck NUGGY

G'day Nuggy, Sorry mate didnt notice your last reply until just now.
Yer you are right about the knockers. The ones who have had the mods done do have good thing to say about them & those that havnt & wont still give their negertive opinion. How they can give an opinion.....stuffed if I know.....humans aye.....
As to Minelab not touching a modded detector....I suppose that it there marketing ploy & putting doubt into peoples minds who are thinking of a mod rather than forking out the $$ for an "upgrade" on a whole new detector. If the mod turns bad for the detector & it cant be fixed by the modder then you are stuffed & in for a new detector anyway.
I love my minelabs but I arent married to them. I also have a Whites Goldmaster VLF. Havnt used it a hell of a lot. It has found me gold & a shed load of shot gun pellets too, but that just shows how small a gold it will find. Ok, not all that deep & probably gold the minelab PI would have found if the right coil & settings were being used. Doesnt mean I will put down (talk bad) the VLF machine. They are both different beasts & have there individual uses. The whites was my prefered machine to take up in to the Coromandel bush. Much lighter, broke down smaller & easily to fit into my back pack. Has a reasonable iron ID & discrimination. Never found me gold in the Coromandel though & the only time the minelab did was when I scanned my dredging tailings & found some beaut specimen pieces that went right thru the box.
Even though the whites found me no gold it always told me it was an iron target which I always dug up anyway. Some were old rail spikes, match box tins, remains of hob nail boots, pick heads, blasting hole drill bits even an old hammer & tap drill. Typical stuff up in the Coro hills. I was alway hoping for a beaut big gold/quartz specimen. Never happened with a detector though.
Have you dropped in on Lanny's post lately?

Take care mate & good luck out there

Regards

John :)

Hi John, Yeah I'd actually forgotten my post here, I disabled all the emails, as I was getting up to 30 a day from this site, about 6 for each post lol.
Yep I hear you about the size portability thing - why I like the G Bug Pro, light as and breaks down small. I take it with me if I'm off anywhere interesting - trouble is I seldom go anywhere interesting. Finally got access sorted to a really good old spot of mine I have been wanting to get back to - but with work, and some vehicle hassles, I just can't get there.
You are bound to find that huge specie or nugget one day - with the hours you are putting in, good on you.

Good Luck - NUGGY
